I do agree with what Odditey said.
I think part of the problem is that the two frames don't really provide a smooth enough transition two when the light on the staff reaches it's brightest and its dimmest. I am also not sure if dithering is really nessecary here either.
I also feel that the other part of it is that you don't really need to change the colors when the light is at it's brightest either. I mean you could find a way to incorporate the brighter purple into the hat but what I would do is perhaps make some highlights out of it and focus on changing the micro shapes from the inside of the hat.
I also feel like the line work is jagged in areas, which kind of kills the presentation for me. I like the idea you are going for and the style its in, but I think what you need to do is to considder how lighting works and think critically about how you want to animate the light to really push this piece, which is easier said than done.
