I've made this little animation according to this story (translated from French) :

Valentine Sâhib is Indian by her blood. She was born on February 8, 1805 in the principality from Mysore. Her mother and her three sisters were murdered during an insurection by British officers. According to her memories, her father was one of the rare  survivors. Kidnapped by the British army, she was sold at a house of joy of Southampton where she nourishes her feelings of revenge. For a few years, she has regularly received mysterious gifts coming from an unknown captain. Ingres Paintings, Gramophone and an amazing mobile lamp using static electricity. She secretly thinks that all these gifts could come from her father who would be Nemo.

Original text :

It's a 165x185 animated gif with 8 frames using a constant palette of 30 unique colors.

Update [2006/06/26] : I tried some corrections :

  • Added light effect
  • Make Valentine breaths
  • Turn her head to the left (not that easy believe me !)

Well I add some fun to build up this animation ... it's still not perfect but I'm enjoying it. Thank you for all your C&C.

Vraiment sympa. L'ambiance. J'aime beaucoup le visage. Y a quelques défauts... mais c'est tellement agréable à regarder.

There's a very strange atmosphere about this peice that I really like.

This is so... french it's not even funny! Good work. It's kind of nutty with all the effects going off at the same time. Eh, I'm so new I shouldn't be giving a crit but what the hell, you may decide to go back on work this sometime...

When she takes a breath, have her rib cage or upper torso lift up and her spine curve just a bit. I'm still dreading making a head turn myself, so kudos for that.

especially the face. (I forgot to add.)

I think it succeeds as a narrative driven piece. However, it would be even greater if you slowed down the animation and gave it a stronger light source. I think the girl's skintone could be even more convincing if you changed it into a lighter color or use more multiple layers of shading. Just some thoughts.

Looks great, but the animations throw eachother off.

Mullet (Level 1 Jukyu) at 6/23/2006 5:12:59 PM
Pretty good. My main complaints are how much the lineart sticks out from subjects, and how active the 3 objects are animated. The girl looks like she's having a somber moment, but the background screams "Disco Party!"

Excellent job on making the painting actually look like a painting though.
