Well, I have decided to leave this community. And I decided to go out with a firm statement on why, instead of quietly and meekly slipping out and hoping no one notices. I do that often enough, and Im not usually one to voice my complaints, but gosh darn it, its time you guys got a taste of your own medicine.

This is by far THE MOST unfriendly community I have EVER joined. Here, Ill list your faults.
One, insulting comments.
Two, poor critiqueing skills.
Three, bickering.

One, almost every comment I have read here that are not placed on the mega amazing most worshiped peices, you know, the ones that maybe are not as good, you guys rip that artist apart like piranas. Always insulting, without giving any critique to HELP the poor artist improve. I cannot belive how many comments I have seen on different peoples artwork that reads something
like "This is a peice of crap" and "I cant belive how terrible this is" Listen: if you dont have something nice to say, dont say anything at all. I dont car if you DO think its crap, someone put time and effort into these things, and your not going to help them improve themselves any by insulting them and making THEM feel like crap.

Two. When you DO endevor to give a critique and be helpfull, you always conform to consise rules, without giving any thought to the idea of maybe different ideas and stylizations. While these tips may be helpfull, it would also be a good idea to expand your horizons and realise that not all pixel art need be done the EXACT SAME WAY. This is in referance mostly to shading techniques and dithering. Your all VERY closed minded when it comes to these areas.

Three, you bicker. About "what is pixel art". My word you guys are dense. What is a painting? Well it was originally done with berry juices mixed in with other things, globbed onto canvas. Obviously any use of acrylics or oils, or painted onto things like wood or the like, is not REAL painting. Right? No. "Pixel art" is a nebulous term, and it has many different forms. I am so disgusted by all the stupid "Um I dont think this is pixel art, it dosnt belong here" comments. Get a life, and learn to play nicely together.

Now obviously I dont mean all of you, and I know that at least a handfull (and probably more!) of you do not apply to this. In fact its probably a minority that does. But it is the minority that makes up the main bulk of this community, and who needs to be a part of a community thats going to drag them down instead of bring them up?
Im sorry if Uv offended anyone here, but I do hope that Iv made you blink, open your eyes a bit and maybe start to THINK about what your saying before you post comments.
I am aware that this will probably get alot of nasty comments, but I really dont want to open debate: I want to make my statement and get out of here.
Any flames will be given the exact amount of attention they deserve: none.
(Ill still be around favouriting things though)
By all.

Oh, and the base for this image is from http://www.pinkland.net
Cheers.

You'll probably won't read this but I have to say:
Omgwtfboonkthxbye! to express my anger.

Now then; you posted this 6 months after you joined. This meaning the community wasn't that bad, I wouldn't stick around THAT long. Hell, if PJ-members acted the way you describe them I wouldn't even bother staying here for a week.

Nextly, not all pieces get viewed by everyone when you post them in the gallery, it's hard to see all without some that escape the eye.  This means not all of the more expierences people can critisize your work if there is anything to critisize, so you'll end up getting comments from 10-year olds that still watch Pokémon. 'lollol dat sux big tim' - 'i dont liek it1'.
If this is not the case and you are critisized by the 'right' people you just can't stand critism. I read all comments of the pieces I view and I've never seen one of them missbehave.Ok, they might get a little rougher time by time but they're still friendly ('I think your lineart sucks dude, you might want to... I do like the idea. Keep it up.')
"Poor critism"?! I've looked your your gallery just now. They all have plenty of comments so I'd say the less critism you get the better.

I feel much better now.

Your piece seriously lacks depth. A doll may come with it's shading already placed, but there's no need to follow from it. Personally i'd increase the contrast of the doll itself, move a few things around and make it more personal.

Your AAing needs improvement, i suggest you seek a tutorial. The ones by St0ven should really help. Quite alot of dollers don't know what AAing is, or just won't use it. Well, why don't you step ahead of the crowd and make something more than just a clothing stickon.

You must realise you seem to be talking about those who do not take up most of the main active members here. You're talking about the n00bs we find very hard to moderate. We do tell people to expand on why they think something sucks. If you find a bad comment, don't blame the entire website and it's members, report the comment! That's why we call ourselves a community.

If you don't like PJ's critisism, you can't go wrong with Pixelopolis'. The critisism you'll get there is top notch.

welcome to the world. it's not a piece of pie!

when i was like, 10, i used to get offended at comments that gave no objection or meaning. why? because i was young and niave. Now, i don't care because there is no point in it. people will always say what they want to say, and you have no power to "open their eyes" or make a difference.

when i started off at pixel art i truly sucked. i had no idea how to shade or the effects of light. since joining several communities just like pixeljoint, i have learned multitudes. i learned from the people who said my work sucked. people don't have to be nice when critiquing you work. it's not their job. mean or not, you need to listen.

It's ok, you don't need crits, you just won't improve as well.
so then, about your piece:

OMG KAWAII~~ xD ^_^

Bye!

Three Quotes:

On Pixel Art: "The price one pays for pursuing any profession, or calling, is an intimate knowledge of it's ugly side". James Baldwin, American author (1924-1987)

On Individual(s) Art:  "All that is gold does not glitter, not all those that wander are lost". J.R.R.Tolkien (eternal)

On Critique: "Authority without wisdom is like a heavy axe without an edge, fitter to bruise than polish". Anne Bradstreet, American poet (1612-1672)

You interpret constructive criticism as an "insult"; this is the kind of attitude that flourishes at the artistically-barren commercial crap-land known as dA. So I suggest you reside there, where people will forever post comments like "omg <3" and "wow i luv this art!1" and no-one benefits or improves their skill.

I'm quite offended at your untrue and ignorant description of Pixel Joint. Everyday I, and everyone else here, comment on pieces of pixel art in a way that will help the artist improve the piece and their skill and therefore sometimes a comment will consist of more than just "omg this is so cool". It seems like you can't get your head around the fact that the best comment is one which is insightful and not just complimentary. So often I try to help an artist by giving them advice on how to improve a piece; I could just go and do something else with my time instead because it doesn't befenit myself to spend 15 minutes pouring over/editing someone elses pixel-art in an attempt to help them improve their understand of pixel art. But I do it anyway, because I like to see others improve, and so does everyone else here at Pixel Joint. In fact I'm going to work on an animation by Neatpuppy which will probably take 30 minutes to a couple of hours; and people do this kind of stuff on PJ all the time, so you can see how what you've said about us is massively ignorant and it upsets me when someone develops the blinded/skewed view which you now have.

As for the doll issue; I just think that the intrinsic qualities of pixel art are totally lost on, not all,  but most dollists. For example, I'm looking at the text on this piece right now and I would bet my arms and legs that it was typed in using an automated text function. It's reasons like this which I think cause such a rift between pixel-artists and dollists.

I don't mean to anger you with anthing I've said, I am just surprised that you have formed this view of Pixel Joint.

Btw, I laughed so hard when I read you saying "gosh darn it"

Mmm, you said:

"Now obviously I dont mean all of you, and I know that at least a handfull (and probably more!) of you do not apply to this. In fact its probably a minority that does. But it is the minority that makes up the main bulk of this community"

First, if its a minority, why make such a fuss?

Second, since when is a minority the main bulk of anywhere?

And also, have you ever posted in the WIP forum or seen the C+C given there? That and the Joint forum is like the heart and the center of the good C+C, the galeries are to display complete and "polished" work, and even there people gets good critisism to edit the work later. I don't understand why do you say "poor critiqueing skills" when often a thread lasts a lot of pages of pure c+c.

When people here say  this is not pixelart, it's because tools were used for the shading or it's just a color reduced photo.  I think either you are making a storm in a glass of water, or as ThereIsNoCure sayd, you just wanted attention :/

Don't leave because a few are complete asses; stay because the majority is helpful.

You've put me on edge, you nasty being, you.
I'd like to point out in what should be my last comment on this situation that:
This rant was insulting. I'll quote. "My word you guys are dense."
It offered poor critiques, which seemed "VERY closed minded", failed to follow the guidelines: "if you dont have something nice to say, dont say anything at all.". It also was overly negative without any suggestions for improvement, simply statements of that which is wrong. Last time I checked, that was poor C&C.
You've put me in a bad mood, and I'm a reasonable guy to work with. I very much don't appreciate an attack on something I hold dear, especially when it is for the most part unfair and potentially fueled by issues outside those mentioned. Personal issues got you down? Try not to spit fire at a group of people that will throw it right back. Just aint wise, hon.
If you care to further discuss, feel free to email me at Gregorio_Beek@hotmail.com. I kinda want to see how you see things. I hate having a one-sided view.

Ensellitis (Level 11 Sensei) @ 6/24/2006 23:01
", you guys rip that artist apart like piranas." yeah, and i am better for the times they have done that.  You seem to forget that critique is what this place is for.  If someone says a piece sucks, guess what, it probably does.

We bicker about what is pixelart because there is no set definition, and we have have different minds.  I know you are use to a bunch of midless zombie dollers who only do 1/3 of the work required, but we do all the work here.

So don't let the virtual door hit you in your big virtual ass on the way out...  Much love, Ensellitis

P.s.  You need to dither that dress more, and AA that text.  I give it a 4/9

cure (Level 11 Pixellite) @ 6/24/2006 22:57

Emo.  "I am aware that this will probably get alot of nasty comments" : such expectations lead me to believe the attention may play a role in this piece and your leaving.  Go out with a bang atleast, not a doll.  How anticlimatic.

user
Saboteur (Level 4 Shichikyu) @ 6/24/2006 22:57

This ain't a utopian society, but neither is it a hellhole. People give their opinions, and what more could an artist ask for? I mean, is not the idea of art to please people visually? If that is the case, then it shouldn't matter who says what, as long as they're saying what they believe to be true.
I'll agree with you that some comments are complete shit, but call them out when you recieve them. Ask for an elaborated criticism. Don't whine that everyone sucks at C&C, because that ain't the case, and if you truly believe it is, you're sadly mistaken.
You're welcome to leave; I'd not known of your existence before this, but don't bring the house down with you, or even make an attempt to. Stay around and improve it with your presence or haul out and stay out without vandalizing the walls on your exit.

user
Dra_chan (Level 8 Shodan) @ 6/24/2006 22:52
I have received more helpful critique than anywere else. If you search the forums and the gallery, you find constructive critisism. This is just not deviantart, where everyone is OMFG SO CUTEEEEEEE!

user
CDI (Level 5 Detective) @ 6/24/2006 22:48
Well done (art that is) as for the rant, I agree to a good majority of it, and you shouldn't leave because alot of mean people, if you stay, that will make the nice ones seem all the better
