anti-aliasing. Like using grey to smooth out a place where black and white meet. And posting a WIP in the WIP thread would help a lot, then post in the gallery when you're pleased with the result.
Also, some effective AA and replacement of black lines is in order i imagine. There are plently of AAing tutorials out there if you need any, along with dithering. Although if you're new at dithering i don't think it would help this piece. Anime usually uses cell shading, therefore in pixel art with flat shadows and AAing.
On the hair don't be afraid to get detailed in the shading. Think about it, with this style of art, the hair comes out in spikey chunks, so for each chunk there should be shadow on the underside. This should be done throughout all of that orange space of hair. Just think about it as if the hair was a 3D object.
I think more shading of the hair and face could greatly enhance this piece. Please do re-post Rynmaru's rendition of the piece once he's finished. I am learning too. :)
