Some copper/brass machine sieges the castle (previously sprited, in my gallery), the fourth frame would be a cannon emerging from the steam, but I don't want to do that yet (my attempts look lame for now)

I really like the general style here, reminds me of old VGA games. The steam is what I suggest working on.. it only approaches reality in the third panel. Consider that the steam has weight, and that's what controls its dispersal (in conjunction with atmospheric pressure). For a start, because its hot and somewhat turbulent, it will tend to collide -- hence the swirly way steam/smoke is often drawn in cartoons; its turbulence prevents it from clumping. So I suggest first drawing some guide lines showing the air flow, then drawing the steam on them.
