things happened like this: * I wanted to develop a simpler style for animating with * I chose my LAB colorcube palette since it'd suit this style * sketched a sword * remembered an evil character who wields a flaming runesword * drew the flames * animated it * decided I wanted an alternate version... the fully flaming one could be used when landing a strike. * Drew the fully-flaming part of the anim.
30 minutes in all, I estimate. I could have tweaked the animation parameters more, but I didn't need that to convey the general idea.
The style reminds me of Willow Pattern (a game for Amstrad CPC).

I separated them, and I can see that it's got more problems than I initially thought. extra frames seem to be needed.
That jump was intended as a transition frame between burning and fully-burning, if you're talking about one of the fully-burning frames. Clearly it didn't work.
the flames seems to jump to the top of the blade in one frame. generally, when animating fire, the entire blade should be surrounded by flames all the time.
