I've never played this game and was able to recognize a lot of the characters at such scale, which is a good sign, I think!

great sprite reduction! it's always challenging having to make smarter decisions with limited space, but your use of shadow and color made it work very well

This is freakishly good. 

Nice job on such small sprites! I've done something similar in the past and I know how tricky this is.
