user
Necky (Level 1 Rookie) @ 8/17/2006 10:06
My last post isn't aimed at those that have posted constructive critism, you know who you are :)

user
Necky (Level 1 Rookie) @ 8/17/2006 09:50
SIGH! Here we go again. Come on guys, stop being so childish with your comments. Constructive comments please.  I've not posted any comments about what I think of other peoples artwork on here, I could, and their would be a few uncomfortable home truths, but what's the point !! I mean really ...

user
AlanDryhair (Level 1 Rookie) @ 8/17/2006 09:37
Thanks Leath, Hitler Hulk :D

user
AlanDryhair (Level 1 Rookie) @ 8/17/2006 09:30
I can see clearly that you are mearly having a pop at my artwork, I'm not even going to entertain a reply to that.  So I'll just say thank you for your comments.

not to be the echo, but theres an incredible number of anatomical and lighting and compositional issues that to my eyes make this awkward bordering on hideous.  there are so many novice moves (centralized figure, lack of focal point, the lighting is reverse, the ambient is inconsistent, the forms very asymmetric, shading insonsistent....and where is his collar bone? navel?  nipples? etc...) that i have to wonder how they _all_ made it past you while you were working.  these types of things cant really be dismissed with talk of deadlines and career, and they really stand in the way of this piece looking good.  i give it one star simply for the fact that 7 hours is a lot of time

if you were to rework this, i say change the lighting completely so that it works from front to back, shift him over, turn him more to his side, even out the anatomy, and base him on someone who has real strenth, not a bodybuilder, because this guy looks like hes been carved from stone, theres nothing powerful about him.

sorry if these seems harsh, i know you probably have some fans that are going to eat me for this, but if this were a drawing or painting, it would have recieved much heavier critique even from a regular highschool teacher, and a college teacher would have destroyed it without hesitation.  my critique was actually rather gentle compared to what might have been said.

Leath (Level 2 Kukyu) @ 8/15/2006 10:07
this is excellent. Perfect coloration man, really astonishing. The only thing Im not digging is that the shadow below his nose makes it look like Hitler mustashe lol. Maybe Hitler became hulk when he was mad ^^

user
AlanDryhair (Level 1 Rookie) @ 8/12/2006 02:41
You cant see his ribs because he is enormous.  Your abs do go all the way to you pecs, try to be more resourcefull with your comments, have you actually looked at a 300lbs bodybuilder, it was drawn from a photo.

user
Blick (Level 7 Captain) @ 8/11/2006 22:24
Where are his ribs? His abs just go all the way up into his pecs and it's just so... strange. I also don't understand why the ambient blue lighting doesn't hit his right (viewer left) arm, but manages to make it to his torso and his opposite arm.

A lot of silly mistakes in anatomy and lighting.

user
verfum (Level 4 Deputy) @ 8/11/2006 16:13

Where's his nips?

(I feel a minor tap heading my way)

Badassbill (Level 11 Big Foot) @ 8/11/2006 08:19
The jeans don't follow the contrast of light and dark like on the body and faint hint of yellow in one of the shades makes it seem somehow off to me. Very impressive though.

Mordalles (Level 1 Hired Gun) @ 8/11/2006 05:52
i dont work for bullfrog.

user
AlanDryhair (Level 1 Rookie) @ 8/11/2006 05:13
I love setting myself challenges, been like that for years.  How good can I make a peice of art in such little time?  7 Hours was an estimate, if I took into account of doing it around my work it's probably something like 4-5 hours solid.  I think that's how I come to work for BullFrog, shocked them at the interview

user
spiv (Level 4 Button Man) @ 8/11/2006 04:43
7hours? :-O

user
AlanDryhair (Level 1 Rookie) @ 8/11/2006 01:23

Hey that's very true, goes to show how long it's been since I did my last bit of 2D work and recieved critisisms.  Must admit there were a lot more critics back then compared to 3D work, I put this down to that it's harder to produce a good looking 2D peice of work compared to 3D.  Thanks again guys.  I think the anatomy is crazy because it's Hulk, he's not human, he's something else, more extreme.

If someone has a dude about comics, ask me. THE COMIC TEACHER ON LINE. Har, har, har!!

user
Sgrum (Level 5 Captain) @ 8/11/2006 00:52

Alan, if you subbmit an art, you´re exposed to recive critics about the anatomy and others, not only about the pixel paintwork itself. The whole of a work it´s the complete structure of the art itself (draw, colour, dithering , position of the body or pieces of the scene...), not only the colour or the dithering. All the members of the page has recibed some critics about your works. Don´t fall in the "stars vanity". I worked in illustration and design for 16 years and I still recive critics. Remember: the critic is good ´cause teach you about your wrongs or to doing better jobs.

My best whishes for you and your work. Carry on.

Holy s**t!! Whoa, really great. You've got some problems with anatomy, bat this is awesome:)

user
bilbofrodotolkien (Level 2 Hired Gun) @ 8/10/2006 23:31
impressive and very well done for me

user
Mordalles (Level 1 Hired Gun) @ 8/10/2006 16:48
i have not worked in the gaming industry for 10 years, nor have i done any sprites 15 years ago.

it just felt like the approriate thing to say.

carry on.

user
Larwick (Level 8 Tengu) @ 8/10/2006 16:30
Alan, you ask people whether it looks good, and we tell you it does yet there are many anatomical errors and you seem to be making excuses rather than excepting people's critisism.

Apart from that it is done well, and i really like the grey/yellowish look he has (the facts by some of you were nice too).

user
AlanDryhair (Level 1 Rookie) @ 8/10/2006 16:15
I dont care about anatomy to perfection, it's piece of fantasy work.  I appreciate the advice but I was under a deadline, something I've worked with all my professional years, as in 10 years of hand drawn pixel art work in the games industry.  Nobody is perfect with so little time to work with.  Does it look good? That's all I'm asking for.  His abs seem curved, have you ever observed HEAVY bodgybuilders, they are wide around the middle.  The abs are NOT wrong.  Thanks again though

user
Demon (Level 3 Stalker) @ 8/10/2006 16:12
Comics History Lessons FTW! XD

user
Jace (Level 1 Gangster) @ 8/10/2006 15:52
  • His pecs seem caved in
  • His abs seem curved a bit
  • And the belt loop area of his shorts look weird.
Other than those 3 things, It pwns.

Sgrum (Level 5 Captain) @ 8/10/2006 14:42
Filax 666 sys the true. The original Hulk (1962) was grey, ´cause Lee and Kirby created him like a mix between a Neanderthal man and Mr. Hyde, but when they printed a page to test the colours by first time, the grey was dirty and difficult to differentiate from the backgrounds and the draw lines itselfs (remember: until the 90´s the colour in the comics was a dot pattern painted over a solid colour). Then they decided to change the original colour by green ´cause Stan Lee and Jack Kirby had painted the Gamma Rays in green: the Hulk must be green if was created by a green ray. Later, Marvel comics decide recover the original Hulk and paint him in grey, decrease his strong and increase his intelligence (the press machines can paint in many solid colours patterns by this time ) ´cause the Hulk sales goes bad. But this change of colour don´t like too much to the fans, and Marvel decide to change once more to green... And this is the history, boys, as was told me a long time ago...

user
Demon (Level 3 Stalker) @ 8/10/2006 13:22
Naw, the hulk was grey as Mr.Fixit.  Originally and always was Green.

user
Filax_666 (Level 6 Hitman) @ 8/10/2006 12:35
Just a fun a fact: Hulk WAS grey, but due to a problem of some sort (had to do with printing if I remember correctly) they changed his colour to green.

user
Sgrum (Level 5 Captain) @ 8/10/2006 10:52

It´s a good job of shadows and dithering... but the anatomy is wrong: the left chest in the torso must be smaller, the right hand bigger and the top abdominal muscles smaller. The twist of the entire body are wrong (the navel must begin over the button of the jeans and the entire abdomen must be twisted to the end of the centre of the chest)

user
AlanDryhair (Level 1 Rookie) @ 8/10/2006 09:44
Thanks buddy, much appreciated, I've always loved working on stuff like this.  I've just started a new one now, might have it done tomorrow.

Skull (Level 11 CEO) @ 8/10/2006 09:38
Perhaps, but it doesn't matter, it looks awesome. Fantastic work.

user
AlanDryhair (Level 1 Rookie) @ 8/10/2006 09:24

I should of named it GreyHulk

user
AlanDryhair (Level 1 Rookie) @ 8/10/2006 09:09
Thanks  Although this is fantasy art, I wasn't angling towards perfection. And it doesn't need to be more green, I wanted to do something different, sorry.  And it's pretty good for 7 hours.

user
Dark Rogue (Level 5 Rokkyu) @ 8/10/2006 08:57
and the hair is sort of... messed up, in my opinion. Forgot to add that.

user
Dark Rogue (Level 5 Rokkyu) @ 8/10/2006 08:54
Needs to be more green. But, the shading looks so realistic, and only 32 colors. Great job.

user
Bob_Jones (Level 2 Peon) @ 8/10/2006 08:49
Looks great, only crits I have are that the shadowed part of his right  (our left) arm/hand doesnt look right, maybe theres a little too much shadow there plus you didnt use the blue ambient lighting thats on the shadowed part of the torso and the head/neck on this arm.

user
big brother (Level 11 Admiral) @ 8/10/2006 08:41

Good work, just have a few crits (off the top of my head):

Jeans seem turned towards the viewer more than the center line of his torso.

Navel is too low, look at this:

Wow! That's dudey! Like the signature.

I think you'll need to get Danny's permission before you can use his hair, LOL

Keep em coming Al.
