I kept seeing all those sick Johto Redrawn pieces, but they said that they didn't have any open slots for more artwork so I decided to make my own "Kanto Redrawn" based on some Pokemon Red scenes. That's how it started anyways! Then I've been on my Earthbound kick so I had to give it that cabinet projection, and then I gave it my own critters based on a monster collector game I wanted to make a few years back, so now its just its own little mockup.
If I made this as an actual game, my theory behind the colors would be to keep all the backgrounds and everything 2-bit, but then your player character and all your recruited monsters would be in their own palettes so they would stick out. That way would still have that nostalgic environment look, but then it would be another reward for capturing monsters since every time you caught one their individual color palette would be revealed.
Working with four colors after not using any limited palettes for some time was harder than I thought it would be, definitely gets you in a more puzzle mode, which ended up being pretty fun! |
I always appreciate your thoughts and Im glad you like it!
As for the color choices I was going through a lot of original Pokemon red and blue environment art, and trying to get a similar feel. The main town I was reference had an all blue palette, but for some reason it looked more purple to me, so I emphasized that more, only to see that the original palette didn't have any purple at all!
