Hm, I think there are two things that are making these faces look worse than they should.
1) The colors you're using for the eyes are very, very dark - the sclera have almost the same darkness as the irises. This makes the eyes look kinda glassy and dead.
2) I'd watch out for banding (this is the term for thin lines of shade that look more like they're tracing outlines. This is giving a lot of the hair here a sort of metallic look (particularly on the leftmost portraits)
That being said I love the expression of the one in the middle on the bottom row!
