I made an indie game prototype a few years back that could be summarised as "competitive shmup where you make the enemy waves more dangerous to earn more points from them, and can make the collectibles more valuable before you get them, or steal them from other players trying to inflate their worth". Not a very concise summary.

Good question. I think the prototype of those particular sprites were the first graphics made for the game, where the green guy had his eyes still obscured, and that was what the large promotional sprites were based off of. The green sprite was changed on a whim to compare how it looked ingame to the prototype, but the large promo wasn't changed accordingly. The game project has sat dormant for a couple years since.
