I'll try to fix it anyway. Next time you see this it will be in the forums for C+C. Thanks for the comments, badassbill, istvan and tremulant, I will try and take all of them into account before I resubmit it in a new clean thread. Calacver I reported your comment, sorry for that haha, I just don't think it was neccessary.

Thanks all

Badassbill (Level 11 Big Foot) @ 8/19/2006 06:57
Calacver, people here give crit to help people refine thier work. Every person here who has given crit has pointed out a flaw that can be fixed and it's buloght's choice if he wishes to fix it. In this case buloght's chose to keep it as it is.

user
buloght (Level 6 Centaur) @ 8/19/2006 06:21
I am not here to win trophies, calacver.

user
buloght (Level 6 Centaur) @ 8/19/2006 05:55
Thanks calacver, you are very kind. I'm not gonna do another battlescene, at least not like this one.

user
calacver (Level 1 Rookie) @ 8/19/2006 05:53
The scene in its entirety is very awesome, buloght. I think this piece require a lot more attention and less nitt-picking. The amount of effort you put into your work is outstanding and I applaud you. The skill and detail, and your style, is very unique and different than what used to, you must continue doing it. The way you texture metal and shade like metal should look and other surfaces is something very rare. Well done. Keep doing your awesome pixels.

user
buloght (Level 6 Centaur) @ 8/19/2006 05:40
I feel you on the outlines for the horns, istvan, I'll fix that.

user
calacver (Level 1 Rookie) @ 8/19/2006 05:39
I think the lineart is exceptional, I think the character design and drawing itself is something buloght is really good at, something that lacks a lot of pixel artists. And I think this picture came out perfect. The fading works, I agree buloght, mission accomplished.

user
buloght (Level 6 Centaur) @ 8/19/2006 05:30
Oh yes, over dithering, I don't really understand that. If looking at the berserker, demon holding the head and the dragon, hardly any dithering is visual except for minor areas, and these three units are the focus. I do dither the guys in the back but that is not overly present.

Thanks again for comments.

user
buloght (Level 6 Centaur) @ 8/19/2006 05:26
Thanks for the comments

user
iSTVAN (Level 8 Cannibal) @ 8/18/2006 23:03
I have to agree with badassbill and tremulant here. I don't find the illusion of depth very convincing and I'm not a big fan of the character design seen here. The over dithering also seems pillowy in many areas.

Basically, I see these flaws in shading, character construction and depth as indications that you never quite refined the line art before colouring this piece. I also don't much like the us of dark red to outline grey bits, such as the dragon's teeth and horns.

There seems to be varying opinions here, and thats fine. So if you do love this, and disagree with me, then you're welcome to!

user
Afflict (Level 4 Lieutenant) @ 8/18/2006 16:18
I read the comments here and I am shocked, no really. Not by the art thats a given.
But rather about what is said about the color choices made here.

I wont change a single color in this pallette the beauty is within it. It brings out the WAR and the emotion of the soldiers and the scene benefits extremly from this. Its like a scourged sky and you can almost smell the blood, that is shed.

I believe that every pixel placed in this picture was placed with a contributing factor to the greater good of the picture. Totaly placed in its spot with a reason and no question about that since Buloghts quality is always 5/5 + fav.

Buloght not only mastered the art of Pixel Art but has also mastered how to catch the emotion within a scene.

calacver (Level 1 Rookie) @ 8/18/2006 14:08
Oh, and I love the drawing itself, very good drawing.

user
calacver (Level 1 Rookie) @ 8/18/2006 13:51
That is amazing. The detail and texturing in each character, especially the berzerker and front demon is exceptional. You really are extremely skilled. The dragon owns. I love the distancing of the army even most of is covered.

user
Tremulant (Level 1 Gangster) @ 8/18/2006 13:50

I respect the amount of effort that obviously went in to this, along with the sheer amount of detail (which is all too rarely seen in pixel art). In the end, however, the over dithering, combined with a lethal dose of red, kind of kills it for me.

The fact that it's only 15 colours, though, arouses me thouroughly, and I do love your style...

I've edited the horns in the back, made them less light. Thanks for that badassbill. I know there are probably thousand ways to improve on the fading or to do them differently , but I wanted to do mine in this way. These are two of my favourites, by -DE- and sedge.

The dragon isn't quite HUGE, it's smaller dragons, and I didn't wanna fade him. The rider is above the units just behind the first guys, that was sort of my reference for how much fade to do.

Thanks for your crit, I respect your opinion, you have some great work.

user
buloght (Level 6 Centaur) @ 8/16/2006 16:12
I agree, thanks :)

user
Badassbill (Level 11 Big Foot) @ 8/16/2006 16:04
This is how I see it: Look at that dragon, it's practically the center piece of the picture...and yet what depth effects are shown on it? Slightly more lighting on the face and a bit on the shoulder. This imo simply isn't good enough to compete with the pixeling of the background and frontline soldiers. That dragon is a HUGE mythological beast and should be much greatly affected by depth. As for the chained ogres in the background, they may be affected by depth but damn they have nearly no conrast on em' and horns that are en them seem totaly out of place as they seem too light for them. I sopose you could call me an ass, but I'm just comparing this to the other piece you have submitted where depth has next to no flaws.

this is really awesome!    nice job!!

user
buloght (Level 6 Centaur) @ 8/16/2006 14:02
Thanks for explaning jalonso, I understand now what larwick means

user
jalonso (Level 11 Godfather) @ 8/16/2006 13:39
Yes, double posting is n00bish. Don't do it again, mkay.

user
jalonso (Level 11 Godfather) @ 8/16/2006 13:33
The reference to similarity to my work refers to a certain look of randomness and chaotic pixelling I call organic but some refer to as "scrappy". I of course fully disagree, I slave over every pixel as much as the next guy. I find its more work to scrappify my pieces but the illusion of extra details by suggestion is worth the time. There is something about complete order that goes against my nature anyways. I also take Lar's comment as a compliment.

user
buloght (Level 6 Centaur) @ 8/16/2006 11:21
Look at this noob double post .
Larwick: I must admit, I don't see the simiilarity to jalonso's style at all, but I'll take that as a compliment, since jalonso is a brilliant pixel artist.
Badass: 'is poor' isn't very constructive.

user
buloght (Level 6 Centaur) @ 8/16/2006 11:10
Thanks for the comments. The colours are intentionally red, very red, due to the theme and berserker rage.

user
lordcrazy22 (Level 1 Hired Gun) @ 8/16/2006 09:23
really awesome work! 5/5 from me.

user
Mordalles (Level 1 Hired Gun) @ 8/16/2006 08:09

user
Meka (Level 1 Rookie) @ 8/16/2006 07:35
Really nice, the palette seems to be small but you made something really great with it! Good job!

user
Badassbill (Level 11 Big Foot) @ 8/16/2006 07:33
The background is Good, but the palette and portrail of depth is poor.

user
Larwick (Level 8 Regional Boss) @ 8/16/2006 05:53
Looks nice. Can't say i like it as much as your other though. The clouds look very cool. In all, the style really reminds me of jalonso (i didn't say scrappy!). =D

user
daporta (Level 7 Colonel) @ 8/16/2006 05:48

user
bunlee (Level 5 Killer Klown) @ 8/15/2006 21:22
Woooow. So much depth you put to this with only 15 colors!
The cracked ground, puffy clouds, dragons & monster in different depth, the texture on them, all looks soooo awesome. I especially like the red eyes on the two characters. I don't know why, but I think it give life to the piece. Top notch!
7/7 & +fav

user
Gnarf (Level 1 Depressed) @ 8/15/2006 20:14
