I used to lurk on Pixel Joint and Pixelation back in 2006–2008, and I enjoyed looking at all the great art and reading about pixel art theory but, for whatever reason, I didn't ever join. Perhaps I felt intimidated, or maybe I was burned out from studying art at school.

Eventually, I started a piece based on one of my favourite paintings–Ophelia by JW Waterhouse. I wanted to do my own version of it and get feedback so I could begin my pixel art journey. Unfortunately, I was quite seriously ill in 2008 and I stopped working on the picture while I recovered.

It took a lot out of me to continue university while recovering, and I never went back to the piece. I abandoned art entirely for just over a decade, only picking it up again last year because I wanted something creative to do during lockdown.

I've really enjoyed being a part of the pixel art community and I decided to celebrate joining Pixel Joint and Pixelation by finishing my Ophelia picture for the first anniversary of my being a member here. Here's how I left it in 2008.

Some parts are a bit rough (probably a lot of parts, actually), but it was important to me to stick to this deadline and try to produce something I think my teenage self would've been proud of.

Thanks to all of you, and I look forward to more weeklies, collabs and wonderful art from everyone!

With thanks to AdamF, Alphonso6, binderbear, CELS, Christoballs, Eliathx, eliddell, fskn, scrambled_gegs, and SwagShaw for their invaluable feedback.

@Wayuki: This is a really late reply, but thank you so much! It felt really good to put this to rest, even if I did feel I rushed it to meet my PixelJoint anniversary. I don't think I'll try to do anything special for my second year!

Glad to hear you made a return to art after such a break. Lovely work and beautiful colors, it's a huge upgrade over the original!

Thanks, Flinigan! Looking at it now, I think it could do with some more colours to make it really pop. I'm glad you like what's there, though!

I'm digging the soft colors big time.

Yes, I love a bit of late nineteenth century art. You've really captured the feel of it, here.

At least this time I won't ditch art again. Seriously, what was wrong with me?

Thanks so much for the compliment and for the help. I wish I'd had more time to address everything you and fskn raised. At least I'm free of deadlines now so I can keep working on whatever my next project is for as long as it takes!

Thanks so much, amberMechanic! I know Waterhouse isn't strictly a Preraphaelite, but do you also have an interest in their work (and the work of related artists)? Just wondering based on your Beguiling of Merlin piece, and the style of some of your originals.

Thanks, vrine! That's such a nice thing to say

Awesome piece and really cool to read the story behind this remake. Can't wait for the 2034 version of this.

This is amazing pixel art. The shading on the trees and bushes and the reflections on the water on their own are just great, let alone the work on the figure. Really inspiring stuff.

Fantastic palette! I find myself pretty lost in the details, in a good way. Lovely work :)
