"Getting stick" means receiving criticism. It was probably too British an idiom to randomly use on an international website!
Glad you found some time for PJ lately. I actually was noticong your absence, not regarding this comment section, but overall. Please tell me what does the expression "to get a bit of a stick" mean?
@gawrone I didn't have so much time for Pixel Joint lately but I felt guilty that I hadn't replied since your post had a lot of thought behind it, so please accept a belated reply.
I totally agree with you about the brilliance of the translators. I read a lot of fiction in translation and never really think about it, and I think the fact I wish I was able to read Sapkowski in Polish is, in many ways, a testament to the skill of the translators. That they could convey the density of his wit and wordplay while retaining the meaning is frankly staggering, and I think shows a lot of respect to the original works.
I know the translators who did The Witcher get a bit of stick from people who can speak Polish and English, but they still came across as extremely well-written books. I was very happy when I saw David French, who did most of The Witcher, is also doing doing The Hussite Trilogy.

All of them are flawless but the one I admire the most is the dragon tile since it really made the collab stand out.

It is not necessarly the true. We have to praise the translators too. Sometimes they are kings/queens.
My example - I love the wit and humor of Terry Pratchett, and read couple of works in English and had a blast. It made me feel the style much more, but also it made me appreciate the translator's work, becasue Polish translator of Discworld is simply a genius at his craft and did his job soooo weel it's just unbelievable. After reading a Discworld novel in English, reading it again in Polish gives me double the pleasure, becasue I experience two amazing writers - something like a master and apprentice :P
I imagine translating humor to other language, just to make people understand the joke is hard, but to make it more funny to them becasue much more grounded in their experience and (not only linguistic) culture is something else. Becasue I'm not a native English speaker, reading Pratchett in English just cannot be equally funny to me, as it is for natives.
In case of Sapkowski, I think that things like Old Polish stylisations for instance, could be appreciated and fully understood by either a native or someone who has some academic Polish Studies knowledge. So a great translator can simulate that which will make a better experience reading in your native language, using all the work the translator did, even if you are very efficient at Polish reading. But of course those are just my thoughts.

I need to have a proper look at the more recent contributions in the thread because my focus has been elsewhere, but I'll definitely check out cjlm123's tiles. Your work really is excellent, though, and you've definitely left a mark on these last two collabs.
I wish I could read the books in the original Polish because, given how much Sapkowski clearly loves to play with language (which comes across even in translation), the original writing must have a staggering level of depth and style. Fantasy isn't normally my cup of tea but I devoured that series. The Hussite Trilogy is finally being translated into English and I can't wait to start reading it once they're all out. I believe he considers it his finest work.

I would have to say that this is only my second collab so far, so I feel like many, many artists deserve the title much more than me.But, if we are talking about something more concrete and measurable (like single collab and most contributions), than this time the crown is shared with cjlm123 since he is currently working on his 15th tile.
Also, yes! Witcher books are amazing. They present such high level in so many areas - meticulous worldbuilding, complex and interesting characters, addictive plot, meta level of politics/ethics allegorical to our dark reality (past and present) - just to name a few. It's easy to find fantasy novels which are better one of these, but it's hard to find one which is similarly good at everything.
That presentation is amazing, but nothing less should be expected from the king of the iso collabs!
These are all great, but I'm partial to the Witcher tile (I love the books and the games, and that Roach on the roof reference is hilarious), the Japanese castle, and the one with the two cages. If I'm remembering the thread correctly, that's from Willow (which I haven't seen).
Can't wait to see what you come up with in the next one!
I made my first collab (planet ISO) contributions into a board game, so had to at least try something fancy with this one aswell. Glad you like it :)
