Wow! This piece was a crazy lot of work . But then again, it was work that was fun. I said iIwould finish this piece and submit it before Sunday, but here iIam now submitting on Sunday . While I do started planning this piece way before the weekend, due to many issues, like my procastinaprocr and technical issues beyond my control, I ended up actually working on the piece from Saturday, meaning I had less than three days to release something!
When I was planning this piece, I had various ideas, including an RTS about cats facing mice, one based on the book Animal Farm, slimes fighting crystals, plushies, Plants vs Zombies, and anthromorphic mythical creatures. I didn't want to have something too cliche, like an RTS that's made to have a cute feel with the aid of cats. So I decided to go with a setup where slimes basically posess toys and move with them, kind of like ghosts possessing humans.
I initially wanted to add a few stuffed animals, but there was some issues that cropped up. Firstly, iIwas afraid that at a small canvas size, they would not look like stuffed animals, but just anthromorphic animals. Also, I haven't really done isometric characters, so I found it hard to tldonthem. If I did put the stuffed animals, this piece may have had Giant Teddy bear unit (a Teddy Beast :-)), and a rabbit magician.
The Jack In The Box building is influenced by Jevil from Deltarune, which is a great game! Fun fact: The term Jack In The Box may have been coined from a story about a guy putting a demon in their boot! Some ideas I had for the character in the box were Marx from Kirby, that white jester like character from Persona, a mashup of Sans and Jevil, the mushroom from Mario, and Jake from Adventure Time. I also thought about putting multiple characters in the box. A part of me wishes to make a game that is just an excuse for me to design different Jack-In-A-Boxes!
I also loved working on the UI for the piece. I do wish I could have animated it a liyyli, showing off some more units and information about the building. I also liked designing the floor. I hope it sold the idea of the building actually being small, around the size of a regular jack-in-the-box. I can imagine this being an RTS about a bunch of toys. I inotiniti wanted the buolbuil to be a bunch of packages from the shipping company called Amazone (not to be confused with Amazon). But I think this is better. At the end of the Day, all I can say is, DON'T PROCASTINATE!
THANKS FOR READING!!! CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM IS DEEPLY APPRECIATED!!!

Hey Amazonite. I'm sorry I never really replied until now. All I just want to say is thank you for the advice! About the small canvas issue, it wasnt really about the Jack In The Box. I was having the issue when I wanted to design toy plushies in an isometric view. I eventually scrapped that idea!
Your exercise of progressively reducing the canvas size sounds great! Funny thing is, I usually do something like this but the other way around, starting with 8×8, then going 16×16, then going 32×32, and finally stopping at 64×64. I think I like my exercise since it has a focus on mastering things like general 2D art principles (like perspective), and advanced pixel art techniques like dithering! However, I think there is some value in your exercise, which focuses on the idea of doing more with less, which is sort of a core tenant of pixel art!
I also believe in your critique of the shading. Maybe I could have used some dithering to make things better there. Also, your critique of the black outlines was very handy!
THANKS FOR THE FEEDBACK!!!
