This mockup shows a battle sequence similar to GBA Fire Emblem games, just with a completely different art direction. I wanted to achieve an epic feel - going towards dark/low fantasy but not completely losing out on a slight feeling of 2000s anime OVA.
The idea for doing this I had as early as 2016, when I also started to recreate some of the GBA fire Emblem Sprites in Hi-Bit. Since I‘ve been far too busy with projects to get a piece that ambitious done. So I did a lot of pre-studies and now a lot of it finally comes together in a single artwork.
The artwork is done how real game projects are handled. One simple overlay transparency is used for the lightray. It‘s meant as production focused 32-bit / hi-bit game pixel art.
All elements and characters have been meticulously designed through in order to be unique, still functional and creating the mood.
It starts with tiny things like Bloodaven‘s helmet being a fully functional bascinet which just happens to look like an animal, up to having the architecture of the castle being realistically easy to defend, while still monolithically overshadowing the battlefield. A lot of little details are everywhere to enjoy for anyone who likes medieval & renaissance fantasy worlds with a lil bit of horror.
I might do a process thread on twitter, like for the Bonewalker in a couple of days, in the meanwhile enjoy the artwork and let me know your thoughts :)
