My submissions for the street collab, which you can see here. Thanks to Umbohr for hosting it on We Pixel!
With most of these pieces I took inspiration from real buildings that I know or which I feel typify British buildings. Each one has a thematically appropriate cat somewhere on or in it.
From left to right we have:
Pixel Palace
A Chinese restaurant with a typical Chinatown appearance.
Cat: two beckoning cats in the window.
Medieval House
Inspired by The Shambles in York, which contains a significant number of historic buildings dating from the 14th to the 18th Centuries.
Cat: it has been traditional to place cat statues on buildings in York since 1920, and there is a tourist trail where you spot all of them. As such, there is a cat statue on the roof of this building.
Thanks to Cammymoop for the crit!
Gingerbread House
Self explanatory.
Cat: there's a little gingerbread cat in the top window.
Thanks to Hapiel and Trigonomicon for the advice!
PETSCII House
I thought a Pixel Joint collab needed a PETSCII entry. Obviously the palette and dimensions were dictated by the collab rules, but I tried to follow the rules otherwise. The building is fairly typical of 1930s-ish British houses, although the garage would normally be by the side of this type of house rather than within the ground floor.
Cat: a lovely PETSCII cat designed by Cammymoop sits in front of the garage.
Thanks to Cammymoop for the crits and for letting me use the cat design!
PJ Records
I love music so I had to do a record store. This takes inspiration from lots of different shops and buildings around the UK, with the dormer design being inspired by a house in York.
Cat: there's a cat sitting in front of a gramophone in the window. This references the painting His Master's Voice by Francis Barraud. Brits will recognise the painting as the logo for the entertainment chain HMV, while Americans might know it as the old RCA Victor logo.
Belvedere
A reference to Belvedere by M. C. Escher.
Cat: this one's a bit of a stretch, but I tried to base the pose on this cat drawing by Escher. I had a version where the pose was closer, but it didn't read well at all. Cats are hard at this scale...
Thanks to rocka for the crits!
Finally, I added a black cab going down the road for this version. |
Loved your contributions to this collab! My favorites are the York house and the record shop.
