I have never played this series (or at least i don't remember playing it) but this gave me such an intense wave of nostalgia. Extremly impressive work
I think I never played it because to me it kind of looked like a Warcraft clone but I will def check it out after your suggestion :)
By the way, here's my Windows 98 Pentium III Voodoo 3 3000 retro PC build with an IBM Model-M mechanical keyboard, you might like it :) LINK
I also have a collection of big box PC games from 90's.
Very cool stuff.
Never played the series but I always saw screenshots of it on PC gaming magazines back in 90s. I am a huge 90s PC gaming fan.
@Taks: I'm so glad my piece got someone to play War Wind, it's such an underrated game! Hope you like it
@Artificer-111: I've played a little bit of Dark Reign and Krush Kill and Destroy back in the day, and I do see some similarities in the style, yes. I really miss that era of RTS. Something about its simplicity in gameplay contrasting with very laborious looking units and structures (same goes for Wacraft II, Dark Colony, and so many others).
As for the sprites, I guess the simple answer is that I made them after the tiles (which I tried to put as many details as I could but in a specific range of dark colors), so I made sure they would "pop" from the background, using lighter colors and darker shadows. Since the palette was set in stone (by a personal challenge I put on myself), I wouldn't have too much room for fixing it otherwise.
@specialmin64: Thank you very much!
Downloaded War Wind I, and currently playing the campaign. I picked the Shama' Li faction
I've not heard of War Wind before, although it reminds me a lot of Dark Reign and Krush Kill and Destroy. regardless I really like this as a strategy game mockup. Takes a lot of the intricate details you would get in the textures of these games but cleaned up to a level where they don't collapse under scrutiny or present as much readability issues. Really like the interlocking patterns present in the undergrowth, units sprites are great too - I'm curious how difficult you found it to get them to read on the environment. The rim lighting in abundance of texture on the portraits as well as UI elements is a nice capstone to really sell it as well. Definitely going to have to look up the games now, great work Jinn!
this is awesome! I like the gratuitous textures and 90s grime you slathered over everything. Much better than most games from that time but similar in spirit
edit: I just looked up war wind 2 and that game does have really nice graphics as well (though I still prefer your interpretation). I can definitely see the connection between that and other stuff you've made
I love War Wind, especially 1st one.
My favourite nation, Obblinox, was corrupted in 2d.
And this Image gives me some good memories and inspiration.
I am an indie game developer.
