Producing a submission in the style of a top-down RPG was an inspired choice, there are few horror-themed games in the genre and the examples off top of my head [Sweet Home on Famicom, Dark Arms on NGPC] are notable curios. You've done well in adding gradual shading and specular highlighting to the background assets while also not having them overpower anything else on the screen, with the playable character and textbox both having visual priority and sharing a different colour ramp. The text font and kerning/spacing are particularly pleasing.
My only suggestion would have to do with the inventory/player character menus. The character and item icons have a helpful border around them but the brown menu borders proper don't do enough IMO to delineate them from the main action; perhaps even some highlights on the edge or corners would help, since the textbox has them too.
