Making animation that looks a bit realistic takes some time ... and having some positive critics like you've done encourages improving things ...
Why don't you try one of this fad avatar ... have a look on the pixelation thread about this one, this is quite funny : http://www.pixel-arts.org/pixelation/index.php?topic=1981.0
Updated since then ;-) ... I just found what seems so bad in the previous attempt : it's all so blurry ... too much dithering and not enough contrast. I just redraw lines and applied AA ...
Hi Enoptix ... I agree in nearly all the points you mentioned. I updated it in order to have more coherent shades on face and neck, added some dithering and redraw the animation ...
Thank you for your ideas
Cool! I like that it's animated! I do, however, see a few issues with the shading...
- I would set the color values of the skin to be a little closer together... or perhaps dither them so they blend better.
- Along the lit side of the face, there should be a bit more contrast between the highlighted part and the edge. Just a little. Maybe an inner outline of the middle value.
- The neck shouldn't be as lit as it is. Under the chin, darker value, and I wouldn't extend the highlight all the way to the middle.
- Again, on the forehead, i would extend the highlight a little further and lessen the rounding of the top and maybe more on the bottom.
Just some ideas! Great work! :D
I like everything about this animation. The highlight in the upper right-hand corner gives it a glassy feel like you're on screen -- NEAT. The jaw movements during the simulated speech are good. I also like the fade to that goofy duo-tone - gives it that retro edge that I enjoy as well.
Props and I'll look at more of your work.
