Really sinister. Wonderful! Stage select screens are normally so mundane.
it looks really good i think it would be cool if it were on a table and there was like a gun or a cigarette lying on it or is that played out i dunno
Thanks! I usually don't do any anti-aliasing. I prefer my own work without AA, but maybe that's just because I'm really bad at it.
I definitely can't argue with anyone's opinions, but it's strange, because in any old-fashioned map -- or any modern map, for that matter -- the land is always darker than the sea; the edges are darkened/lightened just like in the above. So it's weird that people are having the reaction they're having, but I still need to do something to try to fix it. A sea serpent or something is a great idea!
You should maybe add some old style sea serpent or a compass rose like this :Rose des vents. This would stop the confusion around the sea and the earth without changing the shades you've done...
Good stuff here, I especially like the font.
NO ONE UNDERSTANDS MY ART, MAN! Haha, that's a great point, and I'll try it the other way and see how it looks. Thanks!!! I really appreciate the critiques!
Thanks, folks! I'm glad no one's mad at me about the gradient/color reduction thing. And I should also mention, for however careful I was to research turn of the century European borders, I was equally lazy about Africa, South America, etc, so I'm sure they're very very wrong. They don't figure into the game too heavily though, so I think it'll be okay for now.
I had an idea, after I finished thing, for a really cool level set in California, and then I remembered it wasn't on my map so I said forget it!!! No way I'm doing this again! :)
Thanks for the advice about Cuba, jalonso. I will definitely be revisiting this thing and cleaning up some countries here and there. This was a huge learning experience, in both pixel art and georgraphy!
Great world map
