This is so cool! I love Pokemon, and this is so fun to see :D
Even though I've already thrown at least one of the old rules out the window (the Pokemon/trainer battle sprites using a fourth colour and still having transparency over the battle backgrounds), I've still stuck with others (the overworld sprites using 3 + transparency, a 4 colour palette overall, 8x8 tiling template) to try and tax my way of thinking - creating tiles to go "how can I duplicate and rearrange these", or creating little idle sprites with their appearance while also pushing for shading when I feel it's reasonable. I'm glad you can see where I'm coming from!
I love these so much! The lush backgrounds and detailed scenes are wonderful. I especially adore that Weedle and Pikachu scene. Makes we wish we could have this game! The new Pokémon games make me nostalgic and miss the pixel art games.
these are brilliant, Pokemon would have felt much more immersive with lush graphics like these, impossible though they may have been. Part of me wants to smooth it out by darkening the lighter midtone and/or anti-aliasing some of the smaller sprites with the 4th color, but I realize the limitations you imposed are needed to preserve the blocky gameboy look
edit from 3 years in the future: the lighter midtone is fine, I was just viewing it on a lousy laptop monitor
I'm sorry but now you have to make this a reality.
