Yes, it was possible to do with a much more limited palette, but from the very beginning I did not limit myself to color.

This image uses 133 colours, of which many are used for just a few indiscernible pixels. Did something go wrong when saving or painting this? I tried an automatic colour reduction on a whim and it looks like up to half the colours in this don't make a visible difference.
