This one is a Gameboy Color conversion of a ZX Spectrum picture of mine. The constraints for GBC pictures being:

  • no more than one 4-colour palette per 8x8 block
  • only 16 4-colour palette for the whole image (so that's theoretically 64 colours maximum but generally you end up using a lot less than that as you use most of the palettes with different combinations of a few colours)

Not sure if I'm very clear here :)

Based on that photography from a BBC documentary.

Composition was really simple,  but our gasmasks both have similar left-sided gas filter and similar bands.

I really impressed )

Hehe, funny coincidence! Great minds think alike, I guess - especially for pictures with simple composition ;)

Thanks for sharing!

Exocet, you may not believe me.

When I saw that your picture at first time, I was feeling the light sense of deja vu.
And now I was looking at my sketchbooks of 2004-2005 (approx).

I like to draw on lectures. In that year (2004) I was sitting on the "OBZH" lecture, it is about health, first aid, survival in extreme situations, etc.
This concrete lesson was about poison gases and gasmasks.
Of course, I was inspired to draw some gasmasks. Then I tried to draw a gasmasked character...

I really didnt seen your picture before 2004 )).
Just look at my sketch of 2004: doom2d.org/jab/gasmasked.jpg

P.S. Excuse me for wrong English.

Like that more than ZX-variant.

I'm not sure, it's been a while now... It's probably not 16 palettes however, as it seems the GBC can only display 56 colours at the same time in the standard mode. Then there might be some palettes that are reserved for the sprites, and some others for the background. But it's not very relevant for still images as you can use sprites to display some parts of the picture if needed.

Shouldn't that be a maximum of 8 4-colour palettes?

Gas13: I think the fact you can't see his eyes makes the guy look more mysterious...

I understand why you weren't pixeling eyes on zx version but why there's no eyes here?

You have inspired me to try something like this.  Excellent work.  You do these so well.
