yes, not using the resolution means it's not really a mockup, but YY-CHR edits tiles in a 128x128 plane (one full CHR page), so I just usually make tiles in there, and arrange them like-so to see how they would look in a game.

=^D Guy: For the most parts, yes, certain areas (like the purple edge of the pipe in the mario scene) would be possible only with a special chip (MMC5, it was like god mode for programmers - but very expensive). I know a good bit about the NES and it's capabilities :p
Mowzr: The first two and the last were designed with castlevania in mind, the top-right was actually made for a hack of blaster master for Gideon Zhi, the bottom-left was me trying to explain to a friend dragon warrior doesn't give me enough tiles (it uses 16 tiles for the entire game :P), and the bottom-middle is mario ;p.
Yes, you mentioned you adore the mario bros imitation.
You did a really good job, pretty neat idea too, I really like the mario bros one the best, at least I guess its mario bros, sorry if thats just a mistake.
I'm not sure what some of the others are trying to resemble, besides one or two of them really looking like castlevania, but either way its really good. Have I mentioned I just adore the mario bros imitation? Those blocks just look like giant flavored jelly blocks. I want to eat them lmao.
that's one thing that's always bothered me as well, the fact that people relate "retro" to "worse." I've seen graphics on NES games that rival SNES games (return of the joker, anyone?)
Man this is excellent work! It always annoys me when peole make "retro" games with no regard to the system limitations. I can see that you know them and mastered them.
heh, on the bottom-right screen, the top of the sky (clouds, thunder, whatever) is actually the same as the ground tile, only with a different pallete :p I like to re-use tiles when possible.
