This was too much fun. I learned much as well, so I guess it was a good experience all-round. Ignorance is Strength. ;-) EDIT: Added a new, nicer on the eyes-version.

What a great job. I really like the 1bit version but this is great. The plain BG color here is a bit off.

orange is way to saturated - i cant see any pillow shaded cannons - i suggest you rid of the orange entirely zAk

As it is, the orange is a little too saturated. It overpowers the detailing on the ship, especially the subtle shading. Some AA between the two fields would be nice, too.

Great!!! I also enjoyed the plain black stenciled version. I like your dirty metal textures.. in some places however it looks a bit pillow-shaded, like the three big cannons.. i don't know what you should do though :P Awesome!
