Switching the game models sounds really cool.
I am an indie game dev and a programmer so I am really into that stuff too.
No, I wouldn't be born until five years after the game released. My birth year is 1997. I first played Alone in the Dark around 2012, about two decades after the initial release. Frederick Raynal actually did a GDC postmortem about the game that same year. Obviously, the game wasn't scary by that point. But, I can only imagine how scary it must've been back then. Everything you mention about the game is very true. The controls are clunky and the changing camera angles are disorienting. There's also many places to explore that lead your curiosity. It definitely isn't easy the first time around. But, I've played the game many times now and have everything memorized. Haha... I've actually been modding the game now with my own Blender Python scripts and have been replacing Edward / Emily with my own models. It's quite fun.
As a kid the game felt like a fever dream, it was scary despite the low poly visuals.
I remember getting frustrated at the instant death traps which there was no way of knowing before dying and the clunky movement of the character and combat mechanics.
But I think the game had a really mysterious and engaging atmosphere and I kept playing just to see what was behind the locked doors.
I never managed to finish it though and remember it being a brutally difficult game.
Did you play it back in the day as well?
Thank you, Theoden! Was there anything specific that you liked or disliked about the game?
I didn't know you were an indie developer and programmer - that's really cool!
