A little monster I've named gnomblins, in is GBC and GBA form.
The illustrations respect the limitations of the consoles of the period, in terms of both canvas size and number of colors. The one on the left is 16x16 with 4 colors and the one on the right is 32x32 with 15 colors, the maximum being 16, (including transparency for both illustrations).
The (fictional) story of this creature:
First appearing in 1994, in France on the Gameboy Color, it originates from the game "Broceliander: The Legendary Woodland," created for the Gameboy by Jean Benoist, a programming enthusiast who later succeeded in having it published on consoles.
The Gnomblins are the first enemies, with a mechanic, encountered in the game. The method to defeat them is quite tedious, and the difficulty curve adds more and more hit points to them as the adventure progresses, quickly making them the most dreaded/hated basic enemy among players.
Despite this, the game achieved a certain level of success, to the extent that its creator established a small independent video game development studio named "Mussel & Fries Studio."
In partnership with a board game company, they took on the task of adapting their games for consoles. However, in 2004, amidst adaptations, the Brocéliande franchise made its return on GBA, in an original and challenging platformer, and the Gnomblins are part of the experience ! The developers took advantage of this opportunity to enrich their backstory, variety and make them the most numerous antagonists in the game, serving as minions to the malevolent Dryad Queen. |
