Good eye! I tried to retain many of those early design choices that were later lost- Marowak's back spines, bipedal Ivysaur, fetal Mew, stabby Kakuna, Pikachunk's darker belly, etc.
Thanks! That's the goal, pay homage to the original sprites to create something that feels like how we remember them (since our memories tend to gloss over the messy pixelling).
These are all so lovely! Tough to pick a favorite! Maybe Nidorina? I love the little blue bit on her nose. There's certain features like that, that I wish stayed around in later gens!

So cute! The soft monochrome palettes work really well for them. 
Just be prepared to have no other extracurricular activities for a while, it's such a time sink!
