This looks pretty nice for an early piece! I would practice cleaner lines (like the swirls in the BG) moving forward. 

A few tools you can use, as well, that will be helpful:
Here you can upload or copy/paste sprites to see color counts. It should be showing this current piece atm!
 
If you ever have trouble coming up with a set of colors I recommend using this site:
You can search keywords, how many colors you want etc.
