Girantis
Giraffe, Angler fish and Mantis.

Study records from the International Biology Institute:

After introducing the Girantis to the African plains, it has in a short few years become a common sight on the savannah. Its lifecycle is relatively long given its size and has adapted to its environment surprisingly well. The Girantis feeds primarily on insects and uses its long tongue, rather than its claws to grasp its prey. It possesses bacteria capable of producing bio-luminescence. Mostly active at night, this is used to its advantage to attract the insects. The claws and light patterns are put into use when fighting for territory against another male. Each male tries to make its claws seem larger than its opponent and their light glands flicker to seem threatening. As opposed to its frontal legs and claws, its four hind legs are composed of only two joints. Some sources say this may be an indication that they were evolved at a later state, or that the frontal legs once worked as claws. Even more surprisingly, in contrast to it's biological makeup; recent studies have shown it to have a genetic makeup closely resembling that of a chameleon. The institute has yet to come up with a feasible conclusion to this. More research is required.

Should have uploaded this before, but I was waiting for my computer to return from the repear shop. Sadly, it came back as a separate disc and 3 dvd's, so I'll just do this now. Chimera competition on Pixelation. I suspect there might be transparancy issues for explorer users. If this is the case, just give the word and I'll fix that.

Ah well. Enjoy.

Wings are cool!

user
Snake (Level 2 Flatfoot) @ 12/15/2006 08:34

Once again, thanks for the feedback guys. To answer the questions:

@mikey: The wings are a mixture of Mantis wings and Angler fish fins. A mantis can actually fly. In fact it's very good at it, though usually the wings are tucked away on it's abdomen and are mainly used for escape. Given that the Girantis is partially composed of a mammal, it would most likely be too heavy to fly. The angler fish I chose can make a faint light in some of it's fins (hence the bright colour), so the wings are mostly there as decoration. They can be used as a speed boost in full galop as well as rudders when changing direction (much like the tail of a cheetah).

@jalonso: The background in the icon was really just to make the icon more interesting. The picture was made so I could post it on various background colours, which is why there's some sellout on it. The sky in the icon was to compliment the description really. If I am to put in a background, I'd have to do quite a few changes to the original.

@spunos: It's about the size of a small elephant. It's main body is roughly close to a rhino.

@milkjon: The font was just doodled with the middle circle paintbrush in msPaint. Thought it looked spiffy.

@Flyguy: I can't say the colour choice in this piece is one of my best, but I made it so it would stand out against most types of background so using less sadurated colours wouldn't work as well for my purposes. In general though, I try to apply pretty standard colour theory. You choose your palette based on what  impression or message you want people to get. In this case, I used bright sadurated colours to take away the the feeling that this was some sort of freak. Then I can use hot-cold contrasts. The more sadurated a colour is, the hotter it is (in most cases). There's also red/yellow-blue contrasts to add to that. Lastly it's considering shadows and where the light is hitting it to define what hue it should have (sadurated, unsadurated, hot, cold, neutral). There's hardly any hot-cold effects applied here as there is no background, so the warm and cold colours could be better used to unify the whole thing in terms of colour and composition.

@CuteBunny: I wouldn't be so sure about that...

O_o
Colours, concept, creation...this is just amazing.

user
Setzer (Level 8 Cannibal) @ 12/14/2006 19:37
Oh look, snake made another masterpiece.

The selout looks abit off in parts, though. on the top of the nose, right side (our right side) of the neck, and it seems abit rough around the edges in other parts, but other than that its ace.

user
tacky (Level 2 Flatfoot) @ 12/14/2006 17:10
love it!! you picked the right animals to coombine. I love the way you chose your colors. Its increadable! =[]

user
Aleiav (Level 2 Quiet One) @ 12/14/2006 12:11
I really like the fact that it looks like an actual animal, not just a bunc of random animal parts put together. :)

user
JerryPie (Level 11 Big Foot) @ 12/13/2006 17:27

I'm really digging the color choices man..coming from someone who can never seem to pick the right colors, how do you do manage to pick the right ones? Obviously from an artistic standpoint there are colors that blend well with each other but i've never taken an art class so I dont know all the rules..

So please how do you pick such amazing color combinations?

Again, awsome work 6/6

user
milkyjon (Level 4 Murderer) @ 12/13/2006 16:08

The thing I like about this creature is that it looks like it could actually have existed. Theres something aboutthe wings tho that are a tad cartoony feeling compaired to the rest. And at first glance at the prewiew I could have swore that id seen that font (reminds me of smarties). I usually go for things that are well animated or cartoony and stylised, but credit has to be given on exeptional work like this. well done.

user
jalonso (Level 11 Godfather) @ 12/12/2006 22:52
So, does anyone else keep expecting a BG to magically appear, like on the icon?

user
chanfan (Level 7 Underboss) @ 12/12/2006 22:38
It's awesome! My only question is the same as Mikey said.. Can it fly?

user
DJD (Level 4 Button Man) @ 12/12/2006 21:27
You managed to make things that would seem impossible to blend together and work it so beautifully that I wouldn't doubt this existed somewhere. The pose is absolutely stunning, five and favved.

user
The B.O.B. (Level 11 Master Assassin) @ 12/12/2006 19:52
I love how well the complementary colors(the purple and yellow) blended so well together. The Giraffe looks so realistic, as well as the other bug parts. It was one of the only pieces that may seem possible if were true. Plus the description was great.
The only thing that bothers me is the thickness of each grounded leg. They seem to all differ(slightly) from each other. Minor nit picking , though. Truly love it, and after viewing the rest of your works, you seem to be one of my fav. pixel artists to date. Send in some mo' for your newly addicted fans!

user
Sohashu (Level 7 Sheriff) @ 12/12/2006 15:34
Crazy.  You know this is a fav.

ZoSo (Level 3 Chief) @ 12/12/2006 14:34

user
mikey (Level 1 Private) @ 12/12/2006 14:10
