I just made this for a quick snow avitar thing.

Edit: Changed colours. Makes alot of difference.

I changed the colours and found it made a huge difference. I think it looks much better now.

I think this would benefit from looking at the cut-out ones more. This is just a square with bits missing, while the stereotypical snowflake has 6 or 8 "branches" that extend into crystalline patterns. You might want to try the forums for help, the people there would be glad to help you improve.
