its very simple really,just click the "make this picture my avatar" thing under the sprite in your gallery... But not all sprites can be avatars: the pictures' "small file" has to be 80*80 pixels or smaller, and theres also a size restriction I think (10 kb or so? not sure).Finally, you have to check the "allow pixeljoint members to use this picture as an avatar" checkbox when sending the file.

This reminds me of Paul Robertson creatures, with so much movement all around the character. I do think it looks unfinished though. There's a bubble near the base of the creature that just disappears, so I figure it's a tar bubble that's popped, but it doesn't burst with easily visible drops like the bubble in it's back.
