the very back layer where you have those leaves, maybe somthing a little less busy, even a solid color, will make it look better

What exactly is going on in the background? the bright blue clashing with the (floating?) green leaves irks me for some reason.

Yes, its hard to make out.*the leaves in the BG being green stand out too much
*the UI elements blend in way too much the tops of the trees of the BG are great but maybe simplify the bottom foliage/greenery so that the sprites stand out some.
* the peachy color of the blocks with the white stars and ? look weak. Changing one of these two color ramps will help. Of course I mean the orange which would help the shells too.
* the sky blue is too strong, notice the venus plant coming out of the pipe blends in too much. lighten that.
*use that very dark brown on the foreground tree to emphasize the actual platforms that now just blend in. They are fine but too 'blended in'
*If you ever cut Yoshi (my hero) in half like that again, I will send my henchmen to beat you to a pulp
ps: nice mockup and all the nitpicking is intended to help not diss.
