I actually kind of like the style you used - something about it appeals to me. But like Doppleganger says, it lacks depth. Perhaps you should pixel the trees instead of making them out of tiles, as this makes them look like they are pieces of wallpaper on a large white wall. Also, pixel a background - white space isn't very fulfilling.
It think that the whole piece lacks depth. The window and door look like they are stacked on top of the cottage and the cottage lookis like it's closer to us than the ground it rests on. The tree leaves suffer from a wicked gridline and also lack any sort of depth.
Regardless of that, I can still enjoy the sharp grass next to the pot on the crate. The contrast works fairly well and it has an amount of depth that nothing else does. It could benefit from a buffer shade perhaps but, otherise it's a good direction to be heading.
All in all it's a valiant effort and I think with practice you will amount to something.
