Very nice, but you should post the reference picture :)

Guts (Level 2 Corporal) at 4/13/2007 3:04:30 AM
Whaou, impressive. I like colors and details. Respect.

Biffo (Level 1 Rookie) at 4/10/2007 1:11:47 PM
I love pixeled trees!!!   Really nice piece

Packrat (Level 7 General Manager) at 4/10/2007 12:10:05 AM
The tiny details in the trees, the colors, the concept, the idea, the everythingness is just so good. Excellent piece.

did i miss something being posted? I should have seen this when i was looking at new pixel art and in the public queue... although i didn't in this case... anyway, it looks amazing... my mouth has the shape of an *O* and i cant get it closed... amazing job!

iLKke (Level 7 Mass Murderer) at 4/9/2007 5:19:09 AM
Very nice.
However I must agree that there are various things that draw the little flower out of the focus, most notably contrasting colours here and there. For instance, the yellow sky almost seems in front of the trees, and various dark tones have nothing in common. I think that the darkest brown should have less red in it and more blue-green.
That said, there's much good effort in this, and it also gets a plus for being so poetic ;D
I'd like to see the photo that was used for reference.

Excellent work.

I love the style of your picture. The tree leaves are especially good.

kakikukeko (Level 5 Detective) at 4/3/2007 6:17:27 PM
@Lawrence, of course things (in reality) in shadows have as much details than in brightess, but you don't notice them as much.. I was talking of perception...
what makes a picture interesting is not the amount of contrast, but where is the contrast..
(but I think you know it anyway ;) )

@Ocean's dream, nice improvement on the grass imo.. (the subject is a bit tiny tho ^^)
(I don't think it matters that in NY there is no tropical birds.. I didn't think it was NY on the picture :) )

khorin (Level 1 Private) at 4/3/2007 4:15:09 PM
Wow! I'm not going to say what everyone has already said however, I must say that I love the atmosphere of this piece. Great job!

inkspot (Level 4 Button Man) at 4/3/2007 2:02:03 PM
Ooooh, nice to see some great improvements

Ocean's Dream (Level 3 Private Eye) at 4/3/2007 1:48:44 PM
Okay, I got to working on the things that were mentioned, and managed to reduce the amount of colors to 15. Hope you like it! For the center of the image, I was going to put a Tropical bird or something, but I decided against it, partially because this is in New York and we don't have Tropical birds... So, added the sky, changed the water, made some other changes too. Thanks for the help, everyone!

ooshmaster (Level 5 Soldier) at 4/3/2007 1:14:45 PM
This would make a cool adventure game background! You should draw a character in there and add an inventory bar at the bottom just to see what it looks like.

Necky (Level 1 Rookie) at 4/3/2007 12:33:29 PM
Great atmosphere you've got going on here :) MY only crit is the water line that meets with the grass is a darker blue which is giving the unnatural illusion of the water being higher than the grass. I'd personally just continue with what you were doing with the water above and have it cut off naturally :) Great job though, the trees are really nice!

Loop (Level 3 Hatchikyu) at 4/3/2007 10:05:14 AM
Really nice, but this would've been ways better if the sky wasn't white.

Lawrence (Level 10 Operative) at 4/3/2007 8:36:39 AM
kakikukeko, things in shadow can have just as much contrast as in brightness. Why ever not? That kind of rendering arguably makes pictures a lot more interesting.

I don't think the discrepancy of that bottom left area lies in the colour contrast, but rather: the blades of grass in the lit area would seem to be less than 1pixel big hence the blurred AA look, but all of a sudden, there are comparatively huge and aliased blades which look anomalous. A tip I have is when you're zoomed in, if you blur your eyes for a moment whilst placing pixels it really helps you to get the holistic view of what you're drawing rather than just drawing on a purely pixel-by-pixel basis. Having a secondary 100% zoom view in your program helps like this too.

Doppleganger (Level 5 Rokkyu) at 4/3/2007 6:54:55 AM
This looks pretty nice. Definite improvement from the last time I saw it. Kakikukeko pretty much handles any new or persisting crits I have so I'll refrain from reiterating.

5/6

kakikukeko (Level 5 Detective) at 4/3/2007 5:42:56 AM
That's a very nice pic, I especially love the way you rendered the grass in the middle (the bright one) .. I think the grass at the bottom left corner didn't need those obvious  details (too contrasted).
Things in shadow need less contrast than in brightness...

Also the composition is a bit pointless.. I don't really know where to look at, and my eyes are attracted by the grass in the middle.. unfortunately , there is nothing special to see there ;)
If you had a subject , like a main tree with the trunk starting in this bright stain.. it would be perfect :)

Anyway, good job, and good improvement compared to the first one (on pixelation)..

Yep, sea is really odd, lacks any distance and depth whatsoever, at first i thought it is a fence or something. Sky is a bit bright too, there is no white sky in nature, brightest thing is the sun. I would go with more gray. But overall, this piece is quite amazing! Grass reminds me of those russian-style paintings, really nice.

Adam (Level 8 Brigadier General) at 4/3/2007 3:55:59 AM

Grass and foliage are looking amazing! And those astonishing shadows on the ground! WOW!

I think the browns could be improved a bit though, and the stright band of sea is a bit odd for me.

agur (Level 1 Gangster) at 4/3/2007 3:32:28 AM
Wow. Looks awsome ;)

chess (Level 7 Colonel) at 4/3/2007 2:28:24 AM
Your are very talented in doin trees ! :)

Lawrence (Level 10 Operative) at 4/3/2007 1:47:21 AM
Yes, although I thought perhaps it could've been the exposure settings on the camera that might have made the sky white, It's hard to tell. If you wanted to squeeze in more colours I suppose you could consolidate a shade from each of the 3 main hues of roughly the same luminance value and desaturate them into one versatile greyish shade (perhaps with a blue tint if it's a shadow tone because the photo seems to have a slightly blue ambiance). Although perhaps you could bypass all that trouble and just depict a clear blue sky. It's just that with such sunlight, a uniformly white sky seems a little out of place. Here's a vibrant example of clouds being lit up if you want a go at it.

Ocean's Dream (Level 3 Private Eye) at 4/3/2007 12:37:56 AM
The sky was white in the photo, plus I wanted to get it to be 16 colors, which I probably wouldn't have been able to do if I had the yellow/orange tones for the sky. Not going to ignore your comment however, as I think it would be a good idea to try, but I'm not quite sure right now how I'd go about it.

Lawrence (Level 10 Operative) at 4/3/2007 12:18:35 AM
Very nice, but I'm not sure if a white sky is the best idea. It's sunny in this, so if that white area is cloud cover, then it should also be lit up by the sun (in orangey tones).
