Stitchy your comment makes great sense :). the thing is - I wanted the characters to NOT fit in.. they're most certainly out-of-blue and contrasting with their soft shading and white cubic silhouettes :) AND their outlines too
I wanted them to sort of.. pop out from the rest of the picture :) that's why the marshmallow-style shading :D
I know exactly what you're saying. :) Thing is.. I don't know if it's the right way to explain it.. But I always prefer to gamble on my work. In fact if it feels 'right', I just feel the NEED add something oddball.. Why I can't quite explain.. I just like to have unconventional stuff. Intentional imperfections and out-of-place things. Hope that makes sense :)
After staring at this for a while and reading the comments i'd have to say that something feels like it doesn't belong. Style-wise, it's the characters. If they were buildings, less cartoony and taller it would fit better. But I understand you were depicting a song and you captured the mood nicely.
Last minute note. (ya it's a double post but it's my own piece so I don't care).
and this might explain the composition a bit to whoever might find it wrong (I really think it's a proper compo.)
instead of breaking it into L R halves, think of it more as TOP and BOTTOM halves. The composition makes more sense if you look at it like that. AND it will make even more sense, when the picture will be introduced on the medium it was actually designed for...
the left side is 'different' intentionaly. just as the not-uniform dither and the on-off aa on the trees. it might be not right, but really.. I wanted it all that way. I wanted it to make the viewer feel 'funny' or weird.. whether it's in 'funny' a good way is of course not up to me to decide :).
Also you just hate my palmtrees dontcha :D?
Composition wise.. I prefer to think it has a proper diagonal/triangular composition :P. Plus the palms are supposed to be further than the dudes on the left from the viewer, so there's no way I'm redrawing them and making them bigger/closer :|..
I wanted to pull the hue futher on the darkest purple to a blue actually.. but I reverted it to purple at the last minute :D.
last but not least when the hell did birds = emo? seagulls are just a symbol of the ocean/seaside to me just like the palms. And I'm albsolutely going to keep em.
Thanks for the crits tho, haven't had my ass kicked for a long time. :D
if the moon was to be the focal point of the picture, then yeah, I'd add texture on it. But in this case, I stripped it of any craters so that it don't drag away too much attention.
you know, sometimes less is more. put too much detail in areas that aren't of 1st importance in the picture and you'll get a confusing result, even if technically sound.
