I think the photo influenced too much here. If you would try pixel a fork without it you could get a better result. Just make an outline, fill with grey and start defining where will be the highlights and the shadows.
Your reference photo has a lot of light sources and reflections probably. It's a bad reference for sure.
I used a photo refference... Its very hard, using dark and light colors.. I think I should not have dithered it etc..etc... Its kinda hard.... I wont change thisone any more..chrome/metal things are on the list to work on.. (and its a laaarge list...)
You forgot to make the template uniform, right now it has both styles in the borders. Also, you could work in this a bit more. Try using more contrast (by hand), look at this example http://www.temple.edu/photo/photographers/spring03/photographers/michellebottone/Kertesz/pictures/Fork.jpg metal is all about very dark shadows and very light reflections, right now it doesn't look sharp, it looks soft. The background dithering looks dull because the colors are very similar.
I tried to add some contrast (not by hand, automaticly) but that didnt work... and I know you are right, I have made this in 30 minutes I think, maybe 1 hour but not more, and Yes I should put in more time, and make it alot better..
I think you could have made it more realistic. A more chrome-ish look. So, more contrast, and real hard highlights from one side, cause in this piece there isn't really a lightsource. Idea is ok, but I would want to refine it if I were you... despite your other projects youre busy with.
