Well, since my boss said I could display some of my work I've done for him, I thought I'd start doing that.

This is Sarbel, a greek pop star, and I had to do his portrait for the title screen. (It was actually presented to me at the last minute to do, so it was a rush job.)

I used this picture as kind of a base after reducing it's colors and size over and over again.

If you were going to break down the colors, I'd say his skin tones are on one layer, shirt is on another and the background and blue light on his face are also on another layer. (but the engine is powerful enough so it could handle more colors on one layer actually...)

Fair enough, thank you.:)

like ilkke said...  this is on the border, and i am on the no side of that border.

i mean, it is nice and all, but it really isnt pixeljoint material.  we frown upon this.  all you really did was color reduce a photo, then cleaned it up.  the end result is nice, but it's not really your end result since the starting result was not yours.  it all reality, this is a color reduction, even if you did clean it up severely...

i am not against this process of pixeling, i am just against it being in the galleries here.

Pixelling over photographs does not make them your own art. It's all VERY SIMPLE.

Eh, I guess that was worded poorly. I was talking about parts that varied from the shading/light in the picture. (Such as the forehead and side of the face where the blue light/blue shadow is.)

But I agree with you on, "No biggy, no matter which way it goes." I'm already satisfied with what I've made, and if it's not accepted in the gallery, that's fine. At this point, I just want to know why it wouldn't be. :P

Im leaning towards saying yes that it should be accepted, if im understanding you 100%

Only part i didnt like was "and in parts, my own shading"

If any of the original shading in the currect image isnt yours, then it shouldnt get accepted really.
No biggy, no matter which way it goes.

Trust me, I didn't just reduce the colors! I hand pixeled all the shading that's there. (Like I keep saying, you can't get that look out of just color reducing.)

I did read the rules, and from what I can tell I didn't break any. It's my own work, not a WIP, not porn, no useless background, gave credit to the photo, it is pixel art, detail image matches, no redundancies, and it's not a project. I don't see the rule that says I can't heavily alter a picture.

I did in FACT hand pixel it. I can actually show you a WIP that I had right AFTER I reduced the colors, (I don't have the 255, but I do have when I reduced the head to 16):

http://img373.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsfhsdfghcg3.png

So as you can see from that, it would be impossible for that work up there to be from JUST color reducing the image. I should also note that I did the shirt by scratch. (Take a good look at the shirt in the ref link in my first post for comparison.)

If you want to say, "you're stealing the photo that was given to by the company to make the work" then sure, I'll buy that to some extent. (Which I didn't steal with those conditions. :P) If you want to say that I didn't put any effort in to it though, you're dead wrong. I did NOT just reduce colors, and I did NOT just resize it. I only did those things to make making the pixel art easier. :P I still hand pixeled over the image, with my own colors, and in parts, my own shading.

As far as I can tell, I've done nothing against the rules so I think it's reasonable to wonder why my pixel art isn't accepted. If the reason is a technicality that I didn't take the picture, I can understand that, but I'll still see it as a "small reason." :P

That is not just a small reason. It's a huge reason. Not only did you just admit tracing a picture you did not take, you also resized it, and color reduced it, multiple times! I'd let the tracing go if you made the sketch/drawing. But a photo? Also,  Read the rules of submiting work before you try to submit something like this.

EDIT: I just noticed that you said you reduced the colors to 255. So you didn't actually hand pixel it? And don't act all cool about it. Stealing artwork and then thinking "Well all I did was resize it, trace it, and color reduce and not put any true effort in" is just idiotic.

Blackbeltdude (Level 7 Ichikyu) @ 6/3/2007 17:04
Well, I know that's true if that's all you did, but I traced over the picture after I resized it and reduced it's colors to about 255... I mean, if you JUST resized it and reduced it's colors, the end result would be different.

But, if that small reason is the reason it's not getting in the gallery, so be it. :P

You may have been supposed to do it for the game, or whatever it is. But color reductions and resizes of normal pictures is still not allowed in the PJ gallery. Or atleast, that's what I've heard here.

user
Blackbeltdude (Level 7 Ichikyu) @ 6/3/2007 13:57
So, does this piece not get accepted because I heavily altered a picture, as I was suppose to? :P

user
Blackbeltdude (Level 7 Ichikyu) @ 6/2/2007 13:23
No, I took the image, reduced it's colors then pixeled over it with my own colors and shading. (Since fewer colors would make it easier for me to trace it.)

If you want, reduce the colors in that image in the link, and you'll see it won't come out at all like what I got.

Christopher (Level 5 Killer Klown) @ 6/2/2007 09:55
I dont understand exactly what you're saying.
Are you saying you just reduced the picture and this is what you got.
Or you just reduced the picture you were using as a reference to help it be easier to redraw.

It kinda looks like you just reduced the picture.

sorry, but color reductions are not allowed on Pixeljoint.

He looks like Charlie Sheen! :p

Nice work though.
