Jalonso, no, your comments are really helpful. The main reason I'm posting stuff here is to get better, and I'm thankful for your time.
About the light source, yeah, I generally stick with left/ top left lighting. You're right about the fuselage. And I'll try some colour variations.

Awesome ship design...I can't tell where the light source is coming from. The front hull seems to have a top left source but the fusillage where it meets the hull is top right. Wings and fans may be top left/right.
The previous green version looked horrid because the shades of green were ugly and not very 'spaceshippy'. These grays while adequate are on the boring side of metal gray, a slight blueish, greenish, rusted cast maybe?
Do I rag on your isos too much? You're good and I only mean to help you make your stuff the best it can possibly be.
