If you had "shifted" the shading on the adjacent walls a little (or even without doing so), you could have gotten rid of the lines indicating the corners (the quite bother, I think). This difference in shading is actually even compelling, since the long shadow indicates a low (thus non-centric) light source.
Since the picture is quadratic and the window at the end of the tunnel is so, too, it would be more harmonic if the lines would have met the pictures corners. Also, I think there are more dithering steps possible.
This is an excellent piece of work in my eyes. Its very simple, with little colours but the effect is amazing. This shows they could have done a bit more with mario.
