Very fast work. It took me about half an hour to finish this.
Inspired by H.P.Lovecraft's prose.

Took 3rd place at Abstract 2003 8bpp gfx compo.

NPA, half an hour is the giveaway.

As a piece of art, it looks awesome, but no matter how long you have been pixelling, there is no way this was done from scratch, with pixels, in half an hour.

[EDIT]: On another note, I am never one to accuse of someone faking pixel art, but the "half an hour" thing threw me off.

That is some serious speed! :0. It's got a good creepy feel to it. It would of been nice to have the shaft of light on the actual characters themselves. I like the composition of the characters.

Liberals.  Destroying the sacred institution of pixel art with your liberalness.

Sorry, if this was created in "half an hour", then the pixels weren't placed entirely by hand. As such, I can't help but compare these types of art with other digital paintings, and not pixel art pieces. Is it pixel art or just a low-color digital painting? I would categorize this as the latter, so I can't comment on pixel technique, because there isn't any. As a digital painting goes, it's okay, although a bit blurry. The palette is nice, but I'm sure you can drop over 1/2 of the colors and it'll still look fine.

And yes, Tomic. I whole-heartedly believe that these low-color digital paintings should not show up on a pixel art board. If this style of art is allowed, I think there should be a revision to the site's submission rules, and a seperate (non-pixel art) catagory added.

I think it's about time people accepted the fact that whether you personally prefer these types of pieces or not they are still legitimately pixel art. You will continue to see more and more of this as long as you look at pixel art and I think that if you disagree with the style of the piece you should avoid further debate and comment on the composition of the piece instead.

Anyway I really like the mood you've set here. You've pulled off the pleasant experience of having things in the image that you may not see the first time around and then they seem to materialize upon further inspection. I love those gravestones and the fence and such in the corner. Nice job all around!

The technique I used is exactly like you explained. I didn't fixed anything afterwards because it was only a test how could this kind of drawing could be fast. And like some people say here and they can't believe it,  it's too fast

iLKke (Level 9 Nidan) @ 9/4/2007 02:19
Yeah, I was flamed for much less than this.
As I see you used shade(dpaint) or range(brilliance) and didn't spend much time retouching it afterwards, but okay. What I don't like are the blurry parts. I don't care about 'index painting' or 'pure pixel art as god wanted it' but the image looks unfinished on a pixel level.

The reason why people are going to bother you with this pure pixel story is cause today ppl think that MS Paint is the mother of all pixeling programs and should be used as a reference to determine 'purity' of your work. Don't get upset by it.

@Bisque: you take a larger brush and then lighten with LMB and darken with RMB. the mode in question cycles through the palette one index at a time. Pretty damn fast!

FrostPumpkin (Level 6 Serial Killer) @ 9/4/2007 00:48
wow, awesome ! this is so smooth !

Animmaniac (Level 4 Murderer) @ 9/3/2007 20:05
This looks like indexed painting. That's the only way to do this in 30 minutes...

Bisque (Level 3 Sergeant) @ 9/3/2007 20:03
for me the controversy is over the time it took. Only 30 minutes? It's wonderful..and i can see where this could be pixel art (though it doesnt look like it w/o zooming really close), but there are so many colours (i count 64) that are placed so precisely (they'd have to be if it is actually pixeled) that theres just no way it took only half an hour. My brain just cant handle that possibility LOL

skeddles (Level 11 Psychopath) @ 9/3/2007 12:15
Half an hour? 64 colors?

dakael (Level 5 Killer Klown) @ 9/3/2007 11:59
ay! why? :) I did all my pictures on Amiga Brillince and because of that i didn't use any kind of image processing. Just pure pixelization. It's also hasn't been painted in 24bp. I still have somewhere painting steps for all my pictures, so any "problems" with my artwork can easilly be solved.

"It's not a pixel art"? Ay? :)

tomic (Level 11 Admiral) @ 9/3/2007 11:50

though it's nice to see that you're not sticking on a specifing style, i expect some controversy concerning this one..
