this pic i was working on for 3 weeks. ever since visiting the MGM grand hotel during my vacation in las vegas i was inspired to make a pixel about the hotels mascot the lion.

using this reference pic
and a lot photographs i took and found on google

i came up with the avatar u see before you.
originally i wanted him to be cartoonish and be my mascot .
i then made him realistic to suit the reference pic.
i will in the future make a cartoonish version.

Well the picture he provided has many differences (if people are proposing that was the image he copied). But there sure is something interesting about the dithering. Perhaps if you made more high quality pieces such as this (at a MUCH larger scale) then I could place some more belief in your abilities.

There's nothing wrong with using the program photoshop.  The program doesn't make the art.  So long as you don't use NPA tools, photoshop is a completely valid program.  And good luck foolin' the vets, kid.

He really thinks there's anyone who cares. We see stuff like this, we know it's a stupid 5 second rip. No need in arguing...

Besides, he mentioned having to pay 200 dollars for Photoshop. The whole point is is he shouldn't be using Photoshop in the first place.

well, whatever story you are telling us about the timeconsuming creation of this piece: i still have massive doubts that this is no trace or overpixeled redux

if pieces are such borderliny for me, then i normally have a look at the other pieces in one's gallery.. 'nuff said

I'm surprised this isn't removed yet. It doesn't qualify for pixel art.

user
ooshmaster (Level 5 Soldier) @ 9/23/2007 13:08
I was suspicious of this before, but wasn't sure. However, the way Spartan jumped to the defense and even resorted to personal attacks seems to fall exactly into the same pattern of others who have posted fraud peices dozens of times in the past...

You idiot.  I was pointing out the the dithering technique used in the stages of your Airwolf piece could possibly show you did this manually but instead you assume I'm condemning your piece here and you make an untrue statement bout my work.

spartan_117 (Level 4 Lieutenant) @ 9/21/2007 04:12
i did not pay 1000 dollars for a new laptop, 100 dollars for a tablet, 200 dollars for photoshop, 5 mins to download graphics gale , sacrificed part of my social life dedicated to pixel art to just rip people off with color reductions. and im not even getting payed for it. not even for producing any other type of digital art. I ruined for myself the perfect vacation to the US and waste 3 weeks of my life pixelling this avatar so people can wrongly accuse me of color reductions. This is to high a price for me to pay for a 1 minute redux (including the time for my computer to turn on and for photoshop to load.)

You're not fooling us, get off this site, ripper!

interesting...

I once obtained a 30-day trial of PhotoShop, but that was at least a year ago.
thanks for the correction.

I guess i was thinking of the 2-color patterns on MSpaint.

curious wolverine how all your pictures seemed to be colored the same way.

user
Carnivac (Level 8 Behemoth) @ 9/20/2007 06:01
Curious that the various stages of spartan's Airwolf picture in the current challenge thread shows a similar dithering technique.

user
Hatch (Level 3 Hatchikyu) @ 9/19/2007 17:50
@ Flydian: Actually, the dither patterns used in this are very much like a Photoshop reduction using pattern dither. I'm not saying that that's what this is, I'm just saying it can't be ruled out based on your argument. If you have Photoshop I urge you to play around with it to see what I mean.

EDIT:  This was a blank post, don't know what happened.

user
soda (Level 10 President) @ 9/19/2007 15:07
Going from your spartan guy to this lion in a matter of eight days is hard to believe, I'd have to say reduction...

user
Flydian (Level 1 Jukyu) @ 9/19/2007 13:50
I've got to agreee with you on that one. I think a reduction would use different dither patterns as well.

but more importantly, awesome pic.

spartan_117 (Level 4 Lieutenant) @ 9/19/2007 08:10
firstly sir the only time i ever pressed the save for web button in my life was during the cyberpunk contest where i had 2 colors more than allowed and got rid of unwanted colors.
secondly, i love pixel joint and i wouldn't risk being banned over a color redux and then create another account like a GAFA.
Not only that, but i also like pixel art, seeing it and applying it. The only other reason i would ever reduce colors is  to put somewhere on a website. and i don't have a website.
finally, a lions hair is frizzy look at any lion and you will see that.
i made my lions hair smooth.

user
Gil (Level 6 Major) @ 9/19/2007 07:23
Stop fooling us, it's obviously a colour reduce...

user
Doomcreator0 (Level 5 Assistant Manager) @ 9/18/2007 13:22
Pretty nice. Though did you trace?

user
Aleiav (Level 2 Quiet One) @ 9/18/2007 13:07
I concur. Looks like a reduction.

user
spartan_117 (Level 4 Lieutenant) @ 9/18/2007 10:04
well it all began when me and my friend where having a conversation and somewhere the topic of purple pandas popped up as a joke. i wanted to pixel this purple panda but i found out the purple panda was already used(google it and ull see why) so i chose the lion because i already had some pics.

user
A.B. (Level 8 Cannibal) @ 9/18/2007 09:50

That one was detailed and good! Awsome shading! ... Why purple?

user
spartan_117 (Level 4 Lieutenant) @ 9/18/2007 04:02
nope not a color redux all was done pixel by pixel. The ref pic was used mainly as a guid to place each component (eyes, nose etc.). But i did trace the nose and partially the mouth contour from this pic.
and thats about it. the lions main was composed from looking at a wealth of pictures.
the upper part of the head was the easiest to do because all the pics i saw described it almost the same.
my other pixels that i have done were done with a lack of patience and sadly no interest.
all my work was based on non stable ideas. this one was crystal solid and because the lion is my favourite animal i actually did it with all my concentration focused on it.

user
surt (Level 11 Godfather) @ 9/18/2007 03:16
I can't say for certain, but it looks very much like a colour reduced photo. It looks nothing like the provided reference, it far more realistic for a start.
The state of the rest of your gallery with your apparent skill level and the number of items under review only lends weight to my suspicions.

user
Thumtac (Level 1 Private) @ 9/17/2007 19:58
That is really cool.

user
spartan_117 (Level 4 Lieutenant) @ 9/17/2007 06:38
i just noticed, it looks pretty good when using the classic theme.

user
spartan_117 (Level 4 Lieutenant) @ 9/17/2007 01:21
did it

user
Hapiel (Level 11 Bonsai) @ 9/16/2007 13:18
You can also change the description..
However the lion looks great!

spartan_117 (Level 4 Lieutenant) @ 9/16/2007 10:20
this is the link for the reference pick. just put a minus sign at the end of the first line of the link because it wouldnt fit.
