I noticed all the DDP-style stuff being submitted lately, so I figured I'd submit the closest thing I've made to it...  This doesn't exactly fall into that precise style, but some inspiration was certainly drawn from the distinct graphic style of Cave games (as well as Seibu Kaihatsu, Hudson, and Compile).  This is the first level boss of the PC-Engine/TurboGrafx-16 CD-ROM shmup we are making.  It's arms will wave back and forth (as well as slide up and down on the rails) in the game, but I've decided to forego that here for the sake of preserving frames and file size.  Hope you all like.  :)

Yes the body is very well done. The claws are alright, but seem kind of puny in comparison to the hulking body. And about the trails, to me it looks like if the arms go to the edge of the trails they would fall off because there's nothing to hold them back :P
If it's possible with the platform limitations I suggest you also add one more color into the design, maybe some yellow or white lines would look nice.

My favorite part isn't the fan here, but the blue parts. They're really solid, really feel like they're metallic, or at least really jump out as three dimensional. Alot of Shmup ships usually give the feeling theyre flat.
I would re-shade one half of it though, the lighting is too uniform, so its a little too apparent you copy-pasted half of it... (if you didn't, well it gives the impression you did!)

The arms are alright, theyre supposed to be on rails that move back and forth as the arm-tentacley-things wiggle, it conveys that well even in the still frame its in right now.

I think this looks pretty good. Are you going to use splines for the little links in the arms?

Loving the bit in the preview. Especially how the fan skips every now and then. The poles and the rings on the arms don't do it for me though. You could do better for them.
