People can be so harsh around here, I'm surprised they didn't rip you a new a-hole :)
It's alright as a first attempt. You could certainly use transparency as suggested, instead of white. Perhaps either a smaller size if you're not going to use the extra space, or a larger icon (better idea) to better utilize the space.
