was originally going to try for the type of thing helm did with his spartan but turned out to be quite hard to blend the colors well enough so I made it with a few more colors

How is this subpixel? Sub-pixel techniques use the fact that you have 3 horizontally-arranged subpixels (R, G, B from left to right) of set hue but variable brightness in each full pixel. By manipulating the channels independently, you can triple effective resolution on the x axis. This is low color, (3bits per pixel RGB?), but certainly not subpixel.
