I would never suspect the foreground with the tree to be colour reduced, that's all fine. You should've just submitted that. The background seems so obviously colour reduced to me i can't help but send this back. Whether it is or not, you need to rethink the way you pixel large background scenes.
This may be one of those pieces that will be required to procure a WIP in order to be accepted. If you didn't do a color reduction, which a concede is what I currently assume, then major props, looks great.
The reasons this looks to be a color reduction are: 1) As you mentioned, the clash of styles. The lightly detailed character stands out amongst the highly detailed background. 2) The random pixels. This is one of the primary characteristics of color reductions.
The random pixels are my biggest qualm. For the amount of skill it would or does take to make a background this aesthetically pleasing, one would expect the artist to maintain a firmer control of pixel placement.
no i didnt reduce a photo, the only reference i used was this http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixelart/20281.htm and this was only inspiration really, kinda what i set out to achieve but obviously didn't get anything like it. i wanted to do a piece where the trees fade into the background. the background and tree was done as separate pieces then added together thats probably why they look a bit out of place together?
