No the extreme contrast is what gives this it's appeal! Nice one.

why do you say that they have different light sources? the light comes from above.

i may try adding some color to it.

Complaints: Palette shouldn't be just greys, try adding a bluish hue and see if that's any better (for such a piece, even red might be good). Symmetry worked ok for this piece, but it really doesn't work out when his cheeks and forehead have different light sources.

 I like it a lot. Good AA, and nice contrast in all the right places.

The extreme contrast is a real strength in my opinion.  Gives it a real moody feel.
