The faceshot's a placeholder for now. The next mock up will do better, but I am quite pleased by how everything turned out especially the Mode 7-esque background and how newly accurate the platform looks *jeez, it's like Nintendo read my mind or something and updated with the stage right after I made one* XD Oh, well, it was inevitable.

why has this one taken down?  just because he "squashed" the hand drawn pixel?

That's a bit over the top don't you think?

If there is a game that uses 3D plane that uses pixel art as textures, it will have that kind of squashed look on the final screen.  Is that usage of pixel art not "pure enough" for people here?

Oh, all right. I understand. ^^

Oh, I get it. ^^ Thanks for clearing that up.

I can clearly see the techniques used that make this pixel art, but you really need to keep the color count down. It looks almost jpeg-ey.

On Mode 7, the picture fades on horizon. The bottom lines are bigger than the upper lines, that are squashed down.

Something like that: think in a plane, or a picture. The camera is on a certain position. If the maximum distance is 100, then pixels at distance 100 of the camera will be at the center of the screen, and are almost invisible (height close to 0). Pixels gets bigger when they're close to the camera. I could make a picture explaining that...

It isn't? O_o

I must've made a mistake then...

Whooooa, that's lovely!

Good work, Smithy, it's beautiful! But it's not Mode 7, you know...
Fav'ed!

I suppose. I didn't see any rules against semi-transparencies or mode 7 effects anywhere so I submitted it like so. If I had known I'd get so much negative feedback because of it, I wouldn't have sent it in and just submitted it as you've said.

Character and stage are great on their own... i'd almost submit without the UI and galaxy.

Smithy-GCN (Level 1 Rookie) @ 2/9/2008 07:49
All right, all right, I'll admit, I really don't know how to make a good galaxy background. I'll fix it up when the next mock up for this series rolls around, I promise.

The color count is high on the bg because it's been resampled when you resized it. In any case its really ugly, and drags the whole picture down.
Spraycan tool is never the way to go. Go spend some hours on making a decent backround, and the overall quality of this will improve dramatically.

The background is a pixel art, all I did was squash it down to create the illusion of depth. Sorry if there was any confusion. =/

I am agree with Metaru, the rest is quite good but the star is not Pixel Art, that's sure

user
Smithy-GCN (Level 1 Rookie) @ 2/9/2008 07:24
Hey, lots of games use different styles to help differentiate their sprites from the backgrounds. I know of some PSX games in particular that do that.

It IS all done by me. Here's a WIP.

Uh, how? I fail to see how I'm an idiot especially since you don't even provide a reason.

Well, here's your WIP. NOW do you believe me?

uhhh I doubt he intended to "copy" someone's style.

user
tomic (Level 11 Admiral) @ 2/9/2008 04:02

what metaru said.. npa, partial at least - the background is hell suspsicious! i'd personally like to see wips for this part

user
Zephiel87 (Level 4 Lieutenant) @ 2/8/2008 23:12
Yeah, the stage alone looked great. All the extras and contrasting styles didn't do much to help, and take away from the pixel art quality.

Metaru (Level 8 Brigadier General) @ 2/8/2008 22:55
If no one wants to point the NON PIXEL ART elements on this image, i shall:
  • first, the image's color count is exactly 256(the galaxy alone has 165)
  • lots of weird color pixels in the galaxy in the background, wich denotes no hand placement.
  • the 0% is obiusly Auto Aliased(it has AA, and the name lacks it?).
  • the shadow of the character is indeed a partial trans layer. same with the red line in front of the portrait.
  • not to mention the unclean lines in this placeholder portrait.
and the lack of credit or mention that the sprite's style is based on auron/orkimedes card battle series.

user
Smithy-GCN (Level 1 Rookie) @ 2/8/2008 22:31
I chose two different styles so the character would stand out better. :p

daamn. this is nice.

user
circuscommando (Level 1 Depressed) @ 2/8/2008 22:25
it looks nice, the main character sprite seems out of place graphically wise, she seems to have a different style to her.
