I've learned some things about Pixel Art from playing Breath Of Fire 2 and wanted to show it :D

Not trying to go for the exact style, but rather trying to show what I have learned.

Meant to be viewed at 2x.

Reference is 5th from the top:

Pallette and lines are all original. No other Refs aside from the one I posted.

Right. In the future I shall pay more attention to these things. Thank you for your critique!

In current state yes, but it may change when adding shadows. As for BOF style itself, I have these notes: heavy anti-aliasing, wild colors, not always manga canon, eyes have white (or color close to white) not only on highlight of the eye, they are quite big. Now I'm going to sleep, but, as it is one of great examples of PA, BOF needs proper study.

So the nose is just about right?

And yes the hair does look quite greasy- I have fixed that.

About nose - it is about when darkest colour is used on lightest area and somehow it works. About hair - better stick to your first formula as when highlight is so brighter from the rest and it is only a point, it looks very greasy. BTW, I make my variants of your avatar as speaking, but yet they are not great.

I'm not sure what you mean- like how my nose looks like an outline, and the reference is just shaded to suggest a nose?

I've updated the nose anyway.

Yeah, the greyish area - in BOF greyish when used on face accents only some points, not wast amounts of skin. Also it is interesting to look how nose is drawn on different characters - seems that some things are just parts of not deleted preliminary outline.

You mean the greyish area? I used that tone to kinda grey out the flesh but I guess it didn't work well. The lighter color I have chosen now is too light for the hair so I had to use another color. I'm not too keen on the pink tone but I didn't want to use another green or yellow. I tried blue but I wasn't too sure.

The background may be too light for your theme. I use Hello Darkness and it looks perfectly fine.

Okay I've done another edit. I greyed out the darker skintone and used it in the hair. It looks better now.

I am not best with colours in my own works (but I try in this field), so better to ask about colors someone like Adarias, but I can say that they are pleasing the eye except in noted left part of face where nothing works as highlight. And background should be darker for an avatar, I think - something like fade in we see in BOF, or you can look at another RPGs.

Thanks for the critique. It seems I got distracted with the colors, and didn't pay attention to the style or lightsource! I've updated it :D

So, are the colors good?

A.B. Lazer (Level 2 Flatfoot) at 2/19/2008 2:37:39 PM
I think you should not fear plagiarism when learning the style. It seems (btw, am I right?) you've tried to avoid using the same lines on the left side of face and in result this part looks unfinished and light source is loosely defined.
